Kansas City, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - Time is running out for Regan Smith to catch his JR Motorsports teammate Chase Elliott in the Nationwide Series championship point standings. With just five races remaining, Elliott, a rookie in the series this season, holds a 26-point lead over Smith. Nationwide is running at Kansas on Saturday and then Charlotte next week. The series will take a two-week break before the season concludes with Texas (Nov. 1), Phoenix (Nov. 8) and Homestead (Nov. 15). Four of the final five races will be contested on 1.5-mile racetracks, including Kansas. On Friday, Smith confirmed that he has signed a one-year contract extension with JR Motorsports, a Nationwide team co-owned by Sprint Cup Series driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., his sister, Kelley Earnhardt Miller, and NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick. TORONTO - The CBC has suffered several major blows in recent months — significant job cuts, the loss of hockey broadcast rights and the recent dramatic departure of one of its most prominent personalities.On Tuesday, the public broadcaster delivered an increasingly rare good-news story. And it turned to a top-flight sports showcase that it knows how to do very well.The CBC and Radio-Canada renewed their commitment to Olympic coverage by securing the broadcast rights to the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea and 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo. The network will partner with Bell Media and Rogers Media to deliver the Games.I think it shows the belief that the Olympic committee has in us continuing to deliver compelling Olympic moments to Canadians, said CBC president Hubert Lacroix.Executives from all three media companies agreed the demands of todays Olympic broadcasting culture make it very challenging — from both a financial and manpower perspective — to go it alone with an event of this magnitude. In addition, consumers now want access to all events in real time on a broadcasting format that works for them. Jeffrey Orridge, executive director of sports properties and general manager of the Olympics at CBC, said a team effort will help facilitate that.We are collaborating on the production, he said. We are going to share airwaves, were going to share technical resources, were going to share our expertise and were going to share talent.Specific coverage details havent been finalized but given its strong reach, expect the CBC to broadcast the top-tier events. The three broadcasters worked together at the Sochi Games, although this deal is more extensive for the specialty networks.Longtime sports broadcasting executive Keith Pelley, now president of Rogers Media, helped build the broadcast consortium model that was used in Vancouver.There is no question that you need multiple broadcasters and multiple outlets to be able to give Canadians what they want from the Olympic Games, Pelley said. There are so many events going on at the same time that one individual broadcaster — regardless of the multi-platforms — can no longer serve the public the way that they need to to actually experience the Games and thats why this partnership came to fruition.Pelley added Rogers has worked closely with the CBC on several initiatives, including the current NHL deal.This is an extension of that, the partnership is just a little bit reversed, he said. Ghomeshi said he has been fired for his sexual behaviour.Last November, the broadcaster lost NHL rights to Rogers Media in a whopping $5.2-billion deal. That led to a dramatic loss of advertising revenue for a network already struggling with federal budget cuts.In April, Lacroix announced that 657 jobs would be slashed to meet a $130-million budget shortfall. Lacroix said at the time 42 per cent of the sports department would be laid off, trimming 38 sports jobs from 90 current positions. In June, he said there would be an additional 1,000 to 1,500 positions cut by 2020.He also announced in April the broadcaster would no longer compete for professional sports rights and would cover fewer sports events, including amateur athletics.But the Olympics are still a product they want to be associated with, Lacroix said.Its a way for us to connect and to tell stories to Canadians from all across the country, he said. Ott is a 31-year-old forward who has been asked to handle too much ice time on a Sabres team lacking bona fide NHL talent. Hes averaging a career-high 19:42 per game -- a couple of seconds more per game than current Blues No. 1 centre David Backes -- despite getting destroyed in terms of puck possession. However, Ott had established earlier in his career that he could be a decent complementary forward, skating in a top-nine role and penalty killing while chipping in some offence and annoying just about anyone he comes in contact with. Since the start of the 2009-2010 season, Ott is the only player in the NHL to have at least 60 goals and 600 penalty minutes. In a third or fourth-line role with the Blues, though, Ott should be in position to have some success. Both Miller and Ott will be unrestricted free agents in the summer, so there isnt any grand financial commitment from the Blues, though if their playoff run goes well, its safe to assume that St. Louis would at least want to keep Miller around. The Sabres Get: G Jaroslav Halak, RW Chris Stewart, LW William Carrier, a first-round pick in 2015 and a third-round pick in 2016. Halak, 28, has been decent this season, posting a .917 save percentage (that matches his career mark) in 40 games. Hes had some ups and downs, including an injury-marred 2013 season during which he posted an .899 save perccentage but, by and large, hes been an above average goaltender throughout his 260-game NHL career.ddddddddddddHalaks .917 career save percentage is actually a hair better than Millers .916 save percentage. While Halak was moved out, its not impossible for the Sabres to flip him again prior to the deadline. Halak will be an unrestricted free agent in the summer, so there are no guarantees about where hes going to be playing next year. Stewart is a 26-year-old power forward who has 15 goals, 26 points and a career-high 112 penalty minutes in 58 games this season. Those numbers are a far cry from last season, when Stewart led the Blues with 36 points in 48 games and his ice time has been knocked down to 14:42 per game, his lowest since his rookie year in 2008-2009. Even worse, Stewart has been getting torched in terms of puck possession, despite starting more than 60% of his shifts in the offensive zone. On a team as good as the Blues, thats not easy to accomplish. Nevertheless, Stewart is a big winger who can score and is under contract at a cap hit of $4.15-million for next season. If he doesnt perform well in Buffalo, Stewart could very easily be moved again, or he could get flipped even before he suits up for the Sabres. Carrier was a second-round pick of the Blues in 2013 and has 56 points (17 G, 39 A) in 59 QMJHL games. He has the size to be a power foward and was traded to Drummondville part way through the season. Carrier will need a few years to develop, but his offensive production this year raises some questions about whether hes going to be a notable scorer as a pro. Getting the Blues first-round pick in 2015 is a nice coup for the Sabres. Its not as though the Blues can be expected to collapse and be in line for the No. 1 pick, which is earmarked for Connor McDavid, but the 2015 draft is expected to be strong, so there is likely more value for the Sabres getting that pick rather than one late in the 2014 draft. The third-round pick in 2016 is a nice sweetener, with upside, as it could be a first-round pick if the Blues reach the Western Conference Final or Miller re-signs in St. Louis. These are two teams in virtually opposite positions. The Blues are ready to take a run at the Stanley Cup and are willing to take on a couple of potential rentals to help in that regard, and while the Blues sacrificed some draft pick value, they didnt lose any core pieces of the team that has been so successful to this point in the season. DENVER -- Theres a new Comeback Kid in Denver, and John Elways proudly looking on as this plucky quarterback wins with his legs, not his arm. Tim Tebows 20-yard touchdown run with 58 seconds left capped a 95-yard drive and sent the Broncos to a 17-13 victory over the stunned New York Jets on Thursday night. "I like winning," Tebow said after his third comeback in a month, "but I wish it wasnt this stressful." The Broncos had punted on their eight previous possessions when they got the ball with less than six minutes and 95 yards to go. Should I have done this or that? Should I have started that goalie there? Should I move this guy to that line?” he said. “Coaching in the NHL is not easy. It’s not supposed to be easy. You’ve got competition that is trying to do the same thing you’re trying to do. The definitive part happens on the ice. You can bring whatever you want into the classroom but the proof is the on-ice performance. That’s how we get evaluated.” So while Carlyle says he plans on coaching again, for now he is going to take care of more pressing issues and take his mind off of hockey for a little while. “The last two mornings I haven’t woken up and been worried about what’s going on with the hockey club, what are we going to do with this, how are we going to deal with that? That’s what coaching does to you. You’re immersed in it. There’s always that constant battering, things that are running through your mind,” he said. “That’s the relief I’m feeling right now. The Los Angeles Angels ace pitched a two-hitter Wednesday night in the rematch, posting his first complete game in nearly two years, and Albert Pujols hit a go-ahead home run in the sixth to lead the Halos to a 2-1 victory. "Those guys roughed me up a little bit at their place, so I wanted to come in here and have a good game and keep us in it as much as possible," Weaver said. "Their guy was throwing a good game, too. So it was nice to come out on top." Weaver (5-3) threw 94 pitches while going the distance for the 12th time in 241 career starts and first time since Aug. 6, 2012, when he beat the Athletics 4-0 with a four-hitter at Oakland. "It was definitely exciting to run out there for the ninth and hear the fans," Weaver said. "Thats what you pitch for -- to go deep into games and finish it off." LOS ANGELES -- Steve Blake will be out at least six weeks with a torn ligament in his right elbow, leaving the Los Angeles Lakers without all three of their injured point guards. Blake was hurt Nov. 26 in Washington, but kept playing until the Lakers team doctors diagnosed the tear this week. He has been starting in the absence of Steve Nash and Jordan Farmar, averaging 9.8 points and 7.7 assists in a strong season. "Its still a little bit in shock right now that Im having another injury and having to sit out," Blake said Thursday before the Lakers flight to Oklahoma City to open a four-game trip. "I was really enjoying the way things were going, so it is tough." Blakes injured ligament is typically repaired by the so-called Tommy John surgery in baseball players. Blake said he wont have surgery, but will attempt to return this season with rest and platelet-rich plasma injections. Blake played 39 minutes against Phoenix on Tuesday night, finishing with nine points and 10 assists. He has logged heavy minutes without Nash, who has been out since Nov. 10 with nerve root irritation, and Farmar, who tore his left hamstring Dec. 1. "Three (point guards), you would think, would be plenty enough to get you through the year," Blake said. "For all of us to be out at the same time is pretty rare, I think." Kobe Bryant, who just returned two games ago from an eight-month absence with a torn Achilles tendon, will fill in at point guard alongside Jodie Meeks. The Lakers (10-11) have fallen back below .500 after losing three of their last four, including both games with Bryant, who expressed wonder at Blakes ability to play so long with the injury. "We just got Kobe back, so I was looking forward to trying to get us all on the court and figuring things out," Blake said. Montreal Canadiens head coach Michel Therrien isnt giving up on Dustin Tokarski, announcing that the 24-year-old goaltender will get the start again in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final against the New York Rangers on Thursday. Tokarski, who had played in three games earlier in the regular season, allowed three goals on 30 shots in a 3-1 loss to the Rangers in his playoff debut on Monday. Therrien also sent a message to Thomas Vanek to pick up his game, rotating the struggling winger on the fourth line at Wednesdays practice with Michael Bournival, Daniel Briere and Brandon Prust at practice. Vanek, who has four goals in the second round against the Boston Bruins, has been held off the scoresheet in Montreals first two games of the Eastern Conference Final. If the idea is passed in that meeting, it will then be presented to the leagues Board of Governors, who ultimately has the final say. Defensive pass interference was one of 13 discussion points when the Rules Committee met on Wednesday but, not surprisingly, DPI was the topic that dominated the meeting, and if the unofficial show of hands was any indication, this rule change proposal will in fact be passed and presented to the Board. It was not unanimous, but the large majority is in favour of adding defensive pass interference to the plays that will be challengeable in the 2014 season. Again the majority of football people on the Rules Committee want this to happen. To give some context, Wednesdays meeting was not the first time this rule proposal was presented to the group; this is a discussion that started in July of last year. That didnt however, limit what was an interesting debate on what, as the head of officials Glen Johnson said, would be a rule change that, "is more than innovative. In the world of officiating, for all sports, its revolutionary.” The proposal on the table, as written in Wednesdays agenda is, "to allow coaches to challenge both called and potential defensive pass interference fouls. A team would be able to use any and all of its coaches challenges (and their potential third earned challenge on a called DPI foul or a potential non-called DPI foul up to the three minute warning of the fourth quarter. This challenge would be carried out using the current replay rules and protocols just as they would for any other challengeable aspect of a play. In the last three minutess of the game, and in overtime, DPI would not be automatically reviewed by the command centre as all the current challengeable calls are now.dddddddddddd It was a major part of the discussion on Wednesday, but in the last three minutes the proposal currently reads, "if a team has both timeouts and unused coaches challenges remaining at the three minute warning of the fourth quarter, they may now challenge a called DPI foul or a potential non-called DPI foul once in this time period. If they are successful in their challenge they will retain their timeout, and if unsuccessful, they will lose their timeout." The three minute warning aspect of the rule change was debated in the meeting on Wednesday and still may be amended; however, it doesnt look like it will be an issue that stops the proposal from moving to the next level. Also, if youre wondering about offensive pass interference, it is not part of this proposal because it is not a point of foul penalty. If offensive pass interference is committed, it is a ten-yard penalty from the line of scrimmage. If defensive pass interference occurs, the ball is placed where the foul happened, conceivably as much as a 30- to 50-yard penalty, and or, put the ball on the one-yard line if the foul occurs in the end zone. Every team in the league, the officials, and the CFLPA are represented in the Rules Committee, which is a group that includes some of the top football minds in our games history; and the majority of them think it is time to expand the use of video review. Again, it was an unofficial show of hands but, unless something changes on Thursday night, the rule proposal to make defensive pass interference the first reviewable judgment penalty in the history of football will be passed and put in the hands of the Board of Governors.
