In a stunning reversal, standout pitcher Masahiro Tanaka will have a chance to leave his Japanese team to move to the majors next season. It was during a news conference Wednesday that Rakuten disclosed Tanaka will be made available through the posting system. Rakuten didnt have to release Tanaka, as he has two years left on his deal with the Golden Eagles. Tanaka compiled a 24-0 record with a 1.27 ERA in 28 games (27 starts) during the 2013 regular season and helped lead Rakuten to the Japan Series title. The 25-year-old has recorded a 99-35 mark with a 2.30 ERA in 175 games (172 starts) since joining Rakuten in 2007. He has 53 complete games, including 18 shutouts, and will be a hot commodity for any major league club who wants to pony up enough money to sign the right-hander. Under new rules set this offseason, the cap on the posting fee was set at $20 million. Teams need to commit that much money to negotiate with Tanaka for up to 30 days, but clubs who do not secure a deal to get the righty will have their cash refunded. If a contract is worked out, the $20 million will go to Rakuten. The New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly among the clubs who are prepared to get into a high-bidding war for Tanaka. He was reportedly paid $4 million last season, but Tanakas annual salary will likely get a significant jump once he signs with an MLB team. The new rules, which are somewhat similar to how European soccer players transfer teams, were put in place to avoid what happened when the Texas Rangers signed pitcher Yu Darvish away from the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters. Darvish had a posting fee of $51.7 million and then the Rangers signed the pitcher to a six-year, $60 million contract. Prior to the 2007 season, the Red Sox got Daisuke Matsuzaka for a $51 million posting fee from the Seibu Lions and then inked the Japanese hurler to a six-year, $52 million pact. Before the $20 million posting limit took effect, the MLB team that offered, on a blind bid, the highest posting fee could negotiate for 30 days with a specific club. If a deal couldnt be reached by the deadline, the player would remain in Japan for another season. Instead of one team negotiating with the player under the former system, all clubs that pay the posting fee, this one of $20 million for Tanaka, can try to work out a contract. ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - Buffalo Bills coach Doug Marrone doesnt believe receiver Robert Woods will be able play at Pittsburgh this weekend because of a sore left ankle. Marrone provided the update after the rookie missed practice Wednesday. Marrone was a little more optimistic about the chances of rookie receiver Marquise Goodwins chances of playing after he missed practice with a strained hamstring. Marrone said Goodwin was expected to return to practice on a limited basis on Thursday. Both receivers were hurt in a 23-13 loss to Kansas City on Sunday. Woods, a second-round pick, was hurt late in the third quarter, when he tumbled out of bounds attempting to make a catch. He has 26 catches for 349 yards and two touchdowns. Those lessons were more than enough to overwhelm the Utah Jazz. Lou Williams scored 25 points and the Hawks continued their offensive upswing as they rolled to an easy 118-85 victory over the Jazz on Friday night, winning their third straight and for the fourth time in five games. The Hawks had 32 assists, adding to their NBA lead and bringing a smile to the face of their first-year coach. "Its an indication theyre just getting a better and better understanding of the ball movement and how we want to play," Budenholzer said. "Passing and hitting the open guy just becomes something thats expected." Atlanta set a scoring high with its 124-107 win over Sacramento on Wednesday night and has topped 110 points in three straight games. Al Horford, who had 23 points, has been a key in the recent flurry of high-scoring games. He has averaged 23.6 points in his last five games. Williams, who has played in only 14 games in his return from knee surgery, took extra shooting practice after scoring only two points in 20 minutes in Wednesday nights win over Sacramento. "Im glad it paid off," Williams said. "It was one of the nights we had everything clicking." The Hawks never trailed and pushed their lead to double digits for good in the opening period. They kept up the pressure, outscoring Utah in every period and making 52.3 per cent of their shots (45 of 86) from the field. Budenholzer said the most encouraging sign was "not so much putting them away, but just continuing to play the way we play, just doing the things we did to establish a lead. Tonight was a step forward in that direction." Jeff Teague had nine points and eight assists. Horford was resting when the Hawks took an 85-58 lead into the final period. "Our energy was the difference," Horford said. The Jazz agreed.dddddddddddd "Its a mental thing," said Utahs Derrick Favours. "Weve just got to come out with the energy and the attitude like they had against us tonight." It was a letdown for Utah coach Tyrone Corbin following a win at Orlando on Wednesday night. "I thought we didnt come out with the sense of urgency wed been seeing," Corbin said. "I thought wed turned the corner, I felt like, the way we played in Orlando the other night. I was looking for that effort. We just didnt have it from the beginning tonight." Enes Kanter had 13 points and 13 rebounds for Utah (7-22). Alec Burks also had 13 points. Trey Burke, who scored a career-high 30 points against Orlando, made only 1 of 8 shots for two points. Atlantas Paul Millsap had 14 points and 10 rebounds against his former Utah teammates. The Hawks took their largest halftime lead of the season, pulling ahead by 21 points to lead 55-34 at the break. Horford had 14 points in the half. Kyle Korver extended his NBA record by making a 3-pointer in his 96th consecutive game. His made the first of his two 3s with 4:24 remaining in the first period. Utah had a scare midway through the third quarter when Gordon Hayward was slow to return to his feet following a collision with Teague as the two were reaching for a loose ball. Hayward remained in the game following a timeout and finished with 11 points. Jeremy Evans, the 2012 slam-dunk competition champion, missed a dunk and then landed hard on his back with 7:53 remaining, giving the Jazz another scare. Following a brief delay, Evans remained in the game and had 10 points. NOTES: The Jazz are 0-11 on the road and 1-13 overall when trailing at halftime. ... Atlanta leads the NBA with its average of 25.3 assists per game. ... Hawks G Cartier Martin (sprained left ankle) and F Gustavo Ayon (left ankle) have missed five straight games. ... LONDON -- Michael Laudrup was fired as Swansea manager on Tuesday, paying the price for a slump in the year since delivering the south Wales clubs first major trophy. The Dane is leaving the Premier League club after 20 months, having signed a new contract in March 2013 after being linked with leading clubs following his teams triumph in the League Cup. Now, though, Swansea is 12th in the standings but just two points above the relegation zone, prompting the 49-year-old Laudrups dismissal. "It is a decision we have taken reluctantly," chairman Huw Jenkins said. "But its a decision made in the best interests of Swansea City Football Club and our supporters. It is the first time in nearly 10 years that the club has parted with a manager in this way, but we had to remove the constant uncertainty surrounding the club and Michaels long-term future with us." Garry Monk, the 34-year-old defender who has been out injured since September, will replace Laudrup, alongside current first team coach Alan Curtis, "for the foreseeable future," Swansea said. Like Laudrup, two possible contenders for the job on a full-time basis are former Barcelona players who advocate the type of passing game favoured by Swansea; Oscar Garcia, who currently manages second-tier club Brighton, and Luis Enrique, who is in his first season as coach of Celta Vigo. Swanseas next game is the south Wales derby against fierce rival Cardiff at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday. "After thinking long and hard about the best way forward, I felt it was unlikely we would achieve a stable environment at the club (with Laudrup) to allow us to get back to basics and produce the performance levels that have served Swansea City so well over the last few years," Jenkins said. "Now we need to put that uncertainty behind us and move forward as a united football club on all fronts." For Laudrup, whose fortunes have rapidly plummeted since the League Cup success last February, it is the latest setback in a mixed managerial career for the former forward following a successful playing career that took in both Barcelona and Real Madrid. After winning the league and cup in Denmark with Brondby, he guided Getafe to the final of the Copa del Rey -- where they lost to Sevilla -- in his one season with the unheralded Spanish club. Next came a troubled year in Russia with Spartak Moscow before returning to Spain with Mallorca, where he soon fell out with the owners. It was at Swansea where his profile soared, building on the work of predecessor Brendan Rodgers and initially establishing the team as a fixture in the Premier Leagues top 10 with its attractive passing game. But since beating lowly Bradford in the cup final, Swansea has won just eight of out 35 Premier League games across the two seasons and there have been continuous reports about a rift with the hierarchy. Tom Brady completed 23-of-35 passes for 182 yards with one touchdown for New England (12-3), which will clinch the AFCs top seed if Denver loses at Cincinnati on Monday night. With the Patriots clinging to a one-point lead in the fourth quarter, Brady threw an interception while under pressure, a theme throughout the game. Cornerback Marcus Williams picked off the pass that deflected off wide receiver Brandon LaFells hands at the New England 31-yard line. The Patriots defense stiffened as a third-down sack by linebacker Donta Hightower forced a 52-yard Nick Folk field goal attempt that was tipped by lineman Vince Wilfork and landed short. New England ran out the remaining 5:16, converting a pair of third downs. Danny Amendola, filling in for Julian Edelman on both offense and special teams, was tackled near the marker at the New York 48-yard line after a screen pass on 3rd-and-7. Some confusion ensued as the ball appeared to be inches shy of a first down based upon a measurement. However, the official signaled a first down, leading to a unsuccessful challenge by the Jets. Brandon Bolden then ran around the right edge for 17 yards on 3rd-and-1 to seal the win. We were able to make the plays we needed to make at the end of the game and thats a credit to the players, said New England coach Bill Belichick, who earned his 230th career win to surpass Curly Lambeau for sole possession of fourth place in NFL history. Geno Smith passed for 210 yards on 17-of-27 efficiency with a touchdown and one interception for the Jets (3-12). Another game that I thought we had a chance to win against New England, but thats been the story. Probably four of the last five times weve playyed them it seems like that, but to their credit they find ways to win, said Jets coach Rex Ryan.dddddddddddd The New York defense hounded Brady right from the start, registering three first-quarter sacks. New England began the second quarter in New York territory after a 39-yard punt return by Amendola, who had eight catches on 11 targets for 63 yards in place of Edelman. The Patriots leading receiver missed the game with a concussion and a thigh injury. Brady capped the six-play, 36-yard drive with a touchdown pass to Rob Gronkowski. The tight end lined up wide left and hauled in a back-shoulder fade from three yards out. The Jets tied the game at 7-7 when tight end Jeff Cumberland beat safety Patrick Chung on a seam route for a 25-yard touchdown catch. Center Nick Mangold was carted off the field with a left ankle injury during the 12-play, 87-yard drive. Folk kicked a 26-yard field goal to put New York up 10-7 late in a first half that saw New England limited to 52 yards. The Jets reached the red zone on their opening possession of the third quarter, but settled for a 23-yard Folk field goal. New England then changed its tempo on offense, going no-huddle, and had success moving the ball. The drive ultimately stalled at the New York 6-yard line and Stephen Gostkowski kicked a 24-yard field goal. Smith was then picked off by linebacker Jamie Collins on an underthrown pass to tight end Jace Amaro. The Patriots moved in front off the turnover as Jonas Gray ran for a 1-yard touchdown 1:09 into the fourth quarter. Folk made a 37-yard field goal with 7:53 remaining to cap the ensuing New York drive. Game Notes New York wide receiver Percy Harvin (ribs) left the game and didnt return ... TORONTO – Mason Raymond was coming off what he believed to be a pretty good sixth season in Vancouver. He scored 10 goals in 46 games and entered the summer of 2013 as an unrestricted free agent for the first time. But when September rolled around and training camps were due to open in a matter of days, Raymond found himself without the safety and security of a contract. “We all knew what was happening with the cap,” he told the Leaf Report. “But did I think Id be in that situation? No, not at all.” Amid the now forgotten wreckage of the last NHL lockout was the plunge in the caps upper limit from $70 million in 2013 to $64.3 million this fall. The dip in available dollars and subsequent uncertainty left many veterans, like Raymond and new Leaf Jerred Smithson, searching with frustration for amenable contracts, often with little or no success. Though he had played in over 300 NHL games and had scored 25 goals as recently as 2010, Raymond had no better option but a professional tryout in Toronto on the eve of training camp. Suffice it to say, the lack of opportunity took him by surprise and remains a source of bewilderment. “I had a good year last year,” said the 27-year-old, who totaled 22 points in his final season with the Canucks. “I fully expected something to materialize. To be honest, I didnt really know that youd come into a team on a tryout five days before camp opened. I was optimistic and so was my agent, but it just seemed like for whatever reason a lot of players got stuck in the situation that I did.” There was a general sense among teams, including the Leafs, that cost-effective opportunities might present themselves because of the cap crunch this summer. But to find Raymond available on the eve of training camp was certainly an unexpected and pleasant surprise. Inked to a one-year contract for an even $1 million, he has proven a valuable find so far. Averaging what would be a career-high of 19 minutes, Raymond has scored five goals and 11 points in 17 games. His speedy presence, amid a 10-game suspension to David Clarkson and early injuries to Nik Kulemin, James van Riemsdyk and Joffrey Lupul, as well as current ones to Tyler Bozak and Dave Bolland, has been an obvious aid to the Leafs, who sit third in the Atlantic division. “Ive always believed Im an NHL player,” Raymond said. “I thought that prior to coming to camp, I thought that all summer and I think that to this day. You have to go out and prove that more importantly to yourself, I think. Im a big believer that, [if] you do the right things, play some good hockey, everything else will take care of itself.” Some fled to Europe with no jobs to be found as the summer months waned and became fall. Others stuck around and remained as patient as possible, Raymond and Smithson, a veteran of 588 career games prior to this season, among them. “I knew the situation,” said Smithson, in conversation with the Leaf Report. “I knew the cap was going down, but nothing can really prepare you for that. I figured I was still good enough to get a job, get a one-way deal somewhere and, when it didnt happen, it was tough. It was not so much humbling, but more frustrating. I knew it was a possibility, but once it really hit, it [was] not a good feeling.” Unlike Raymond, Smithson wasnt able to land even a tryout in the NHL, but one instead with the Marlies of the AHL. It was mid-October. He and his fiancé were parents of a newborn baby. Patience had been predictably difficult to keep. “I knew right away I wasnt obviously a big name, that teams were going to go after the first few days, so I was prepared to be patient – maybe not this patient, but prepared to be patient,” he said. “Once August rolled around and still, there wasnt anything that was really coming out at me. There were a few tryout offers or two-way deals, but nothing that I was really willing to bite on right away.” Smithson and his agent were forced to give a good, long look to Europe. “It was never a dream of mine to go over to Europe,” he said. “And I made that clear to my agent right away that Im willing to be as patient as I can. It was obviously a lot harder than I originally thought, but it worked out.” Injuries to Bozak and Bolland finally opened a door back into the NHL for Smithson last week - the 34-year-old signed a one-year deal for the veteran minimum of $550,000. A noted faceoff specialist and penalty killer, he has quickly gained an important role for Randy Carlyle, plugging the gap of the two injured centres in both regards. “Im not a big fan of the term ‘it is what is, but I cant control [the cap crunch],” said Smithson, who played seven seasons in Nashville, also making stops in Los Angeles, Florida and Edmonton. “I could just control my attitude and try to stay in the best shape as I possibly could and, if a phone call came, just be ready for when that opportunity knocked. Im very grateful for the opportunity the Leafs gave me, with the Marlies and with them, [and Im] just looking to take advantage of it.” Though Smithson projects as more of a stop-gap option, Raymond could earn himself a larger contract next summer with a productive season. Two years ago, Clarke MacArthur joined the Leafs late in the summer on a bargain one-year deal, worth $1.1 million. Now a member of the Ottawa Senators, MacArthur busted out with a career season that first year in Toronto, subsequently signing a two-year deal worth $6.5 million the following offseason. Raymond could be in line for something similar if he remains productive. At the very least, with the cap expected to rise once more, he is unlikely to find himself in such a precarious position again. "Thats hockey, thats life, thats the cards you were dealt and you have to deal with it,” Raymond said of the cap crunch this past summer. “You can sit here and say the what ifs, whatevers, and all that, but it was a situation and, unfortunately, it happened to some of us. I think [the cap was] the reason, [but] I dont know the exact reason. For [Smithsons] sake and my sake things have worked out well.” Yeezy Boost 350 Turtle Dove . -- Milos Raonic and Aleksandra Wozniak continued successful injury comebacks as each advanced into the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open on Monday to next face reigning Grand Slam champions. MUNICH, Germany -- Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara will be out for six to eight weeks after suffering an extended partial ligament tear in his right knee on Saturday. The club says the Spaniard will miss both Champions League quarterfinal games against Manchester United and the semifinals should Bayern progress. Bayern coach Pep Guardiola says "its bad news. Newcastle shattered Chelseas unlikely bid to go through the 38-game campaign undefeated, pushing 2-0 ahead through a second-half double from Papiss Cisse and then hanging onto its lead after the 81st-minute sending-off of Steven Taylor. Didier Drogbas headed goal in the 83rd set up a frantic finish but Chelsea came unstuck at St. James Park for the third straight season, ending a 14-match unbeaten start in the league. The best team lost. The team which tried to win lost, said Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, who hasnt won at Newcastle in five attempts. We were unlucky. Aguero, the leagues top scorer with 14 goals, limped off in tears after getting hurt in a seemingly innocuous challenge in the second minute at Etihad Stadium. If the Argentina striker had been on the field, he would have taken the penalty converted by Yaya Toure in the 24th minute for the winning goal. Arsenal missed a chance to climb provisionally into the top four by losing 3-2 at Stoke, conceding to Peter Crouch after 19 seconds -- making it the quickest goal of the season -- and two more times in the first half. Santi Cazorla, with a penalty, and Aaron Ramsey scored in the space of two second-half minutess to reduce the gap, but Arsenals hopes of completing a recovery were dented by Calum Chambers red card with 12 minutes left.dddddddddddd Arsenal has won just once in its last nine games at Stoke. Liverpool and Tottenham failed to make up ground in the race for the Champions League places, drawing 0-0 at home to likely relegation candidates Sunderland and Crystal Palace, respectively, to remain marooned in mid-table. Liverpool started captain Steven Gerrard on the bench for the second time in three league games. It was also goalless between Hull and West Bromwich Albion while Queens Park Rangers jumped out of the bottom three by beating Burnley 2-0. Charlie Austin scored QPRs second goal before getting sent off for a second booking. It was Chelseas first defeat since April -- ending an unbeaten run of 23 games, 21 of which have come this season. Such was Chelseas explosive start to the league season and the strength of its squad that there was growing talk that the team could emulate the Arsenal team of 2003-04 in going the campaign undefeated. Goals by Cisse in the 57th and 78th put paid to that. Mourinho said he had no complaints about the result but was unhappy that ball-boys and Newcastle fans took too long to return the ball to the field. You need one ball, he said. Sometimes we had no balls and other times we had two balls. City played three hours later and sealed a fourth straight win thanks to Toures penalty, awarded after James Milner was fouled by Phil Jagielka. City goalkeeper Joe Hart preserved the lead with a brilliant late save to deny Romelu Lukaku. OTTAWA -- The Philadelphia Flyers say they are aware of stories out of Ottawa "surrounding" Claude Giroux, who was reportedly arrested Tuesday night for allegedly grabbing the buttocks of a male police officer. The team says it is not commenting further until they have more information. Ottawa police say they cant comment on the media reports because no charges have been laid. When asked if Giroux was still in custody, a police spokesman said he "is no longer here." Police say they dont expect charges to be laid. The Ottawa Police said in a separate press release that seven arrests were made in connection to Canada Day festivities and that all but one were for "non-criminal matters." Pat Brisson, Girouxs agent, did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment. Giroux, a native of Hearst, Ont., who lives in the Ottawa area, was a finalist for the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP this past season. The 26-year-old had 28 goals and 58 assists in leading the Flyers to the playoffs. Jacob McQuaide Rams Jersey . Watch all the action unfold live on TSN at 10pm et/7pm pt. The Canucks are 0-2-2 in their past four, the second-longest losing stretch of the season behind just an 0-3-2 skid from Nov. 9-19. Vancouver faded on Sunday versus the Anaheim Ducks, giving up a game-tying goal with under two minutes to go in the third period and then the overtime winner in a 4-3 setback with 0.6 seconds left in overtime. The Canucks were outshot 24-8 over the final two periods and overtime. "Weve beaten ourselves a little bit. Weve had a lot of struggles in a lot of different areas the past couple of games. We have to keep our heads and keep on working at our game," said Canucks coach John Tortorella. Henrik Sedin recorded a goal and two assists, while Ryan Kesler and Kevin Bieksa scored for Vancouver. Daniel Sedin finished with three assists and Eddie Lack did his best with 45 saves. Lack got the start after Roberto Luongo got hurt in a collision in net versus the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday. Luongo had just returned from a brief three-game absence caused by a lower-body injury. It is unknown how long Luongo will be out and the team confirmed on Tuesday that Lack will face the Penguins for the first time in his career. Pittsburgh has won its last three versus Vancouver, the last two in a shootout. That includes a 4-3 home win on Oct. 19 in the first of two meetings this season. Malkin had the winner in the third round and Sidney Crosby had a goal and two assists as Fleury made 36 saves.dddddddddddd Luongo turned aside 25 shots in the setback. Pittsburgh is leading the Eastern Conference with 63 points as it has been able to overcome a number of injuries this season. One of the most recent was to Evgeni Malkin, who sat out nine straight games with a lower-body injury before returning in Sundays 6-5 win over the Winnipeg Jets. Though understandably tired afterwards, Malkin didnt miss a beat by logging a pair of goals and an assist. That gave the forward 11 goals and 44 points in just 33 games this season. "Tough game for me. Im a little bit tired, but thanks to my linemates. They did a great job. Most of the time we were in the offensive zone," said Malkin. "I missed lots of game. Im excited to be back and just have fun." James Neal certainly enjoyed Malkins return, notching two goals and an assist himself. Neal has 16 goals and 34 points in 24 games this season, missing 15 earlier in the campaign with a lower-body injury before sitting out another five in early December due to a suspension. Matt Niskanen had the go-ahead goal in Sundays win and Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 29 saves. Kris Letang returned from a 10-game absence caused by an elbow issue and had an assist. Pittsburgh won for the fourth time in its last five games and for the 12th time in a row at home to match a club record. The Pens will have to wait to try and set a new mark as their next three are on the road. The triumph was Pittsburgh head coach Dan Bylsmas 232nd career win, tying him with Eddie Johnson for the most victories in franchise history as well. BARCELONA, Spain -- Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets says only "losers" make excuses after Manchester City justified its Champions League loss to the Spanish champions through officiating error. City manager Manuel Pellegrini said referee Jonas Eriksson "decided the game" when he sent off Martin Demichelis before the hour mark of Barcelonas 2-0 first-leg away win in the last 16. Busquets says "referees make mistakes all the time, for and against you. But making excuses for why you lose is for losers." The Spain internationals comments may provide City with some extra spark ahead of the return leg at the Camp Nou on March 12. On Thursday, UEFA opened an investigation against Pellegrini over his outburst. Nike Roshe Run Floral Italia . Nike Roshe Run Floral Shop . Cody Ross hit his first home run of the year, Eric Chavez went deep for the second consecutive day and the Diamondbacks beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3 on Sunday for their first series win at Chase Field all season. COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Columbus Blue Jackets learned something from a humiliating defeat two nights earlier. Ryan Johansen and R.J. Umberger each scored two goals and the Blue Jackets pulled away in the third period to beat the Philadelphia Flyers 6-3 on Saturday night. The game came 48 hours after the Blue Jackets led 3-0 after two periods and 4-2 with 5 minutes left in Philadelphia, with the Flyers scoring five times in the final period in a 5-4 win. "(Tonight) we kept going after them," Umberger said. "We didnt sit back. We were on our heels in Philadelphia and they got some momentum. But tonight we just kept rolling." David Savard had a goal and an assist and Boone Jenner also scored, while Nikita Nikitin and Corey Tropp each had two assists for the Blue Jackets, who said they were embarrassed by the Thursday collapse. "We didnt play our game (in Philadelphia)," Johansen said. "From the first couple of shifts tonight, we were on. We stuck with it through some adversity -- a couple of injuries, a couple of penalties." Tempering the victory was the loss of Blue Jackets forward Marian Gaborik, who broke a collarbone in the first period and is out indefinitely. This time the Blue Jackets watched a 2-0 lead vanish in 20 seconds late in the second period, but then took control at the outset of the third. Savard took a pass from Nikitin at the 3:36 mark, adjusted to avoid a defender and then slid a rising shot from the right point that beat Ray Emery high on the stick side. Just over 2 minutes later, Savard returned the favour by passing to Nikitin at the left point. His shot, with the Flyers slow to flow back into position, was redirected by Jenner in the slot to push the lead to two. "Obviously, weve got to be better defensively," said Flyers captain Claude Giroux, who had two of his clubs late goals at Wells Fargo Arena. Johansen, who had opened the scoring, then flicked a wrister past Emery on a 2-on-1 break to make it 5-2 with 7:38 left. Umberger then added an empty-netter. "It was a gutsy win, for a lot of reasons," said coach Todd Richards. "You go back to Thursday night and how we lost that game. Tonight we gave up two quick goals as the second period ended, were missing two key elements of our team (forward Matt Calvert also had his arm in a sling after the game) so we were playing short-handed, and we gave up five power plays. And we still came out and won..dddddddddddd" Curtis McElhinney, victimized for all the goals on Thursday night, made the lead stand up with 33 saves. "That was a tough game there on Thursday, to give up five goals in the third period," he said. "This is certainly a nice, big win for us. Its important that everybody relishes this tonight." The Blue Jackets, much like the earlier meeting, got off to a good start only to lose it. At the 10:43 mark of the first period, Gaborik, just back after missing 17 games with a sprained left knee, got off a shot that was pushed aside by Emery. Nick Foligno collected the puck along the back wall and skated to the other side of the cage where he fed Johansen, who lifted a shot from the right doorstep for his 13th of the year. Gaborik, sandwiched between Braydon Coburn and Zac Rinaldo on his shot, got up slowly and immediately skated off the ice to the dressing room. The club announced between periods that the veteran, with 341 goals and 345 assists in 686 games, had a broken collarbone and would be out indefinitely. After James Wisniewskis hard slap shot from the right point was redirected by Umberger into the net made it 2-0, the Flyers responded. On a 3-on-2, Wayne Simmonds, who had two goals for Philadelphia, pulled up and wristed a shot from the high slot that beat McElhinney. Before that could be announced, Matt Reads pass from the short boards skipped past three Blue Jackets to Sean Couturier, who buried it for his seventh goal -- quieting a crowd of 14,090. But unlike what happened two nights before, the Blue Jackets dominated the third. "I dont think we were flat," Flyers coach Craig Berube said. "We made mistakes on their goals that will be easy to correct. They didnt have to happen." Simmonds felt the Flyers could have done more. "I dont think we competed as hard as we did the other night," he said. "Thats what happens. They were definitely determined to win tonight. The looked like they wanted it more than us." Notes: Philadelphia also announced just before the game that D Nicklas Grossman (flu) would be out and that RW Steve Downie would miss 7-10 days (upper body). ... The Flyers Erik Gustafsson went off with a left knee injury after a third-period collision with Columbus Corey Tropp. ... Referee Dan ORourke, kicked in the chest by a skate in the first period, left the ice after Johansens first goal and did not return. BOURNEMOUTH, England - Jordan Hamilton scored in second-half stoppage time to lift the Canadian under-20 soccer team to a 2-2 tie with England on Wednesday.Hamiltons goal came on a volley after a Canadian free kick was stopped. The 18-year-old Toronto FC striker is currently on loan to C.D. Trofense in Portugals second tier.I thought the boys did terrifically well to come back, going a goal down twice, it shows terrific spirit among the group, said manager Rob Gale. But above all I thought it was football game. Both teams looked to try and play, obviously got good quality players on the opposition but for all the quality there, we were difficult to break down.I think we outchanced them overall so I was delighted for the lads. I think it was absolutely just rewards when we got the equalizer.Midfielder Michael Petrasso of Englands Notts Country scored in the 49th minute for Canada, which went behind twice before 6,986 at Goldsands Stadium. Petrasso took a nice through ball from Toronto FCs Manny Aparico and raced 40 yards to goal before calmly finishing the play.Arsenal striker Chuba Akpom opened the scoring for England from close range in the 15th minute before local favourite Baily Cargill of AFC Bournemouth made it 2-1 with another header off a corner in the 85th minute. The Canadian team is in Europe to prepare for the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship in January in Jamaica.Next up for Gales team are games in Marbella, Spain, against Russia on Saturday and the U.S. on Nov. 18.We can build on this, theres still stuff to improve on, but were going in the right direction for sure, said Gale.England was coming off winning the Four Nations Tournament last month, posting wins over host Netherlands and Germany and a tie with Turkey. The veteran defensive back and five-time CFL All-Star has been sent to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in exchange for non-import receiver Kito Poblah. It seemed only a matter of time before Banks would be out in BC after making it known he has no interest in playing out his option year with the team. Lions GM Wally Buono meanwhile, had stated he didnt intend to renegotiate Banks contract. The 10-year CFLer has played the last eight years in BC. Last year the 34-year-old recorded 46 tackles and two interceptions. For his career Banks has 442 tackles and 37 interceptions. OTTAWA - Torontos Patrick Chan is giving the world championships a miss, but he isnt finished with competitive figure skating just yet. Chan captured two silver medals at last months Sochi Winter Games — mens singles and the inaugural team event. But he doesnt have the urge to resume training to defend his world title when the event is held in Saitama, Japan, later this month. However, the 23-year-old said hes committed to chasing a fourth world championship at some point. "Honestly, I know in my heart I want to win another world championship ... I really dont feel like this is the end," Chan said during a conference call. "(After Sochi) I asked myself if I could see myself training at the immediate moment, like right now could I go into training like I did before the Games? "I really didnt see that as a possibility. I already went to a world championships after an Olympic Games (2010 in Vancouver) so I really wanted to enjoy coming home and enjoying the medal and enjoying it with the rest of Canada this time because I didnt have that chance last time. I really wanted to enjoy myself with these two medals." Ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, who also earned two silver medals in Sochi, wont compete at the world championships either. Both were non-commital about their future but the expectation is the two-time world champions and 2010 Olympic champions will retire. "We werent sure how wed feel after the Olympics in Sochi and we ended on such a high note," Virtue said. "We were so pleased with our performances, both short and free dance, and just thrilled with the experience we had at the Olympics it just seems like the right way to end the season. "Kind of a nice way to say good-bye to those two programs." Virtue and Moir finished second in Sochi to Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie White, with the two teams sharing the same coach, Russian Marina Zoueva. Afterwards, the Canadians publicly questioned Zouevas loyalties. "Some of the things we were honest about at that press conference would come as no surprise to Marina," Virtue said. "She was very aware of the situation. "We travelled to Moscow and did two shows after the closing ceremonies and Meryl and Charlie also did their shows and it was a really nice way to cap off the Olympics with spending time with the two of them in a care-free, fun environment where we could just talk about our experiences. I think we probably talked more in that day than we have in the past few years because the pressure was off and we were able to just chat as friends again. It was a nice way to end that chapter with them." While their competitive seasons are over, Moir, Virtue and Chan wont be hanging up their blades. All three will tour and perform with Stars on Ice. "I think were more comfortable trying to take advantage of some of the opportunities after an Olympic Games," Moir said. "Were very much at peace with where were at." Chan was second at the 2010 world championships after finishing fifth at the Vancouver Games, winning his first global crown the following year. The 23-year-old had a glorious opportunity to win gold in Sochi after 19-year-old rival Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan struggled in his free skate. But Chan couldnt take advantage. Twice he faltered during jumps, putting his hand on the ice to keep from falling, and stumbled on a third in settling for the silver behind Hanyu. Chan said he, Virtue and Moir attended a function Monday with Caroline Ouellette, a member of Canadas gold medal-winning womens hockey team. Chan admitted he was somewhat envious of Ouellettes medal. "A gold medal is really, really nice and its different and I definitely get a spell of jealousy," he said. "At the same time I have to look at the experience I had and how different of a sport figure skating is. "These silver medals were not easy to get, they were probably just as hard as a gold medal is. One or two mistakes too many and just in that moment it came out of my grasp. Its a bit of a reminder but again its also a good challenge to kind of stay positive and look at the brighter side of things." Canada will send a 17-member team at the world championships. Olympian Kevin Reynolds, who was 15th at Sochi, will lead Canadas three-man singles team in Japan when the competition begins March 24. Both of Canadas women from the Sochi Games are entered in the worlds. Kaetlyn Osmond was 13th in Russia, and Gabrielle Daleman 17th. Other Canadian Olympians who will compete at Saitama are Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford, who were seventh in pairs; Kirsten Moore-Towers and Dylan Moscovitch, who were fifth; and Paige Lawrence and Rudi Swiegers, who came 14th. Ice dancers Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje, seventh at Sochi, and Alexandra Paul and Mitchell Islam, 18th, will compete at the worlds. The Italian leagues disciplinary panel announced the penalty Monday, a day after Milans 2-1 victory. Winnipeg Jets forward Evander Kane is ready to return to action and will play on Thursday night against the Phoenix Coyotes. Jets head coach Paul Maurice confirmed the news on Tuesday, saying Kane was fully recovered from a hand infection that forced the Jets to put him on Injured Reserve on February 3. Kane initially sustained the hand injury on January 7 during a fight with Eric Brewer of the Tampa Bay Lightning. The 22-year-old returned to the lineup for four games but developed an infection that sidelined him for the Jets final six games prior to the Olympic break. Nike Juvenate Grey Trainers . Yes, that was everyone. With teams unable to even start the process of getting contracts done until 2 p.m. on Friday, the reigning Eastern Conference champions simply decided to go through what amounted to basically a dress rehearsal for what will be the first full practice on Saturday. By then, a dozen more deals are expected to get finalized, giving the Heat more than enough players to start the process of getting ready for a new year. "Today is not obviously your traditional first day of training camp," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. Welcome to the first steps in the post-lockout world, where normalcy may still be a day or two away -- at least. When the Heat convene Saturday afternoon, theyll have 14 days left before the plane leaves for Dallas and a Christmas Day opener against the Mavericks in a rematch of last seasons NBA finals. Spoelstra plans on jumping back to near where the team left off, starting with what he called a playoff practice to gauge how much the Heat remembers from a few months ago. The Heat expect 18 players in training camp, with Mike Miller (hernia) and Eddie House (left knee) sidelined while recovering from surgery and likely out for two weeks or more. Mario Chalmers -- who agreed Friday to a new deal that could pay up to US$12 million over three years -- is expected on the floor Saturday, as are fellow holdovers from last season Juwan Howard and James Jones, both of whom agreed to new deals. Shane Battier signed Friday night and will practice Saturday, as should Eddy Curry, who has been in just 10 NBA games over the past three years. "Ive been knowing Eddy since high school basketball," Bosh said. "I think we know what hes all capable of doing when hes in shape and is at the top of his game. Its unfortunate what has happened to him in the past few years, but Im sure hes eager to get back and hopefully he has a bit of a chip on his shoulder as well." And how does Curry look to Bosh? "Looks good. Looks good," Bosh said. Wade, who has worked out with Curry often -- they are booth pupils of trainer Tim Grover in Chicago -- said he was also impressed.dddddddddddd "It was good to see him come in," Wade said of Curry, who was listed at six-foot-11 and 295 pounds in his last NBA stint. "Just to walk in, I havent seen nobody walk through them doors that big in a long time. So it was good to see." Wade, James and Bosh played plenty of basketball this summer, and Spoelstra raved about their condition entering camp. Bosh is noticeably more muscular, Wade has worked to trim his body fat even below the notoriously demanding Heat standards, and James has said hes been ready to attack the new season since about mid-July anyway. The goal in Miami is obvious, of course. After losing to Dallas in six games last spring, nothing less than a title will satisfy, but at this point, the time isnt right for any rah-rah speeches, Wade said. For now, the Heat are simply happy to be back to work, given that a few weeks ago many players were bracing themselves for no season at all. "You kind of miss it, man," Wade said. "The smell of the gym, hearing the balls bounce, looking on the other end of the court, seeing the guys down there, working with the coaches youre working with, you miss it. It becomes a family and were just happy that were back." The practice uniforms were new, but other than that, very little seemed different about the Heat on Friday. The coaching staff is unchanged, the philosophy will be no different and the rotation figures to be relatively similar to what Miami had last season. So its a far cry from the start of camp a year ago, when the Heat worked James, Bosh, Miller and a slew of other new guys into the mix. And given that this will be an abbreviated training camp, theres a notion that Miami could have a leg up on teams that will have many changes from last season. James cautioned about overstating the importance of that. "Missing these two-and-a-half months, its no advantage for any team," James said. "We would love to have those months back where we could continue to come together as a team, but we have the same time as everyone else has and our guys are just going to try to work every day to get better as a team and be ready to play." NEW YORK, N.Y. - The troubled tenure of Jorge Vergara and Angelica Fuentes as owners of Chivas USA has ended with Major League Soccer purchasing the team. MLS said Thursday it had assumed operation of the team, which had the second-worst record in the league last year at 6-20-8 and averaged a league-low attendance of 8,366 at home. Vergara and Fuentes have controlled the Mexican club Chivas Guadalajara since 2002 and had a 50 per cent interest in Chivas USA when it was created in 2004 and started play the following year. The pair took operating control of Chivas USA in August 2012 when they bought out former partners Antonio and Lorenzo Cue, who had been running the team. "The original plan which we came up with in 2004 and executed in 05 was to extend one of soccers most venerable brands into the United States," MLS Commissioner Don Garber said during a conference call. "The concept was to take a team that in essence represented the hopes and dreams of Mexican soccer fans both in Mexico and the United States and try to extend that here to the United States. "Ultimately the concept didnt work out," he added. "I came up with the idea with folks here at the league. I dont believe it was the concept as much as there was some executional issues." The concept of a league owning a team is not unprecedented. An entity owned by Major League Baseball bought the Montreal Expos in 2002, moved the club to Washington, D.C., for the 2005 season and sold it to the Lerner family the following year. The NHL had operational control of the Phoenix Coyotes from 2009-13. MLS said Wilmer Cabrera, hired as coach on Jan. 9, will remain on the job. The league said it will sell the team to an ownership group committed to keeping the team in the Los Angeles area. Garber hopes to have a deal in place by the end of the year. "Sometimes it takes time to get this done. Were not in a rush," Garber said. Garber said the new ownership group must intend to build a new stadium, and he mentioned the site of the L.A. Sports Arena as a possibility. Chivas USA shares the StubHub Center with the Los Angeles Galaxy. David Beckham was not considered a possible buyer. The former Galaxy star exercised his option to purchase an expansion team in Miami. "I wonder if he would have thought differently if his option execution date was a year from now versus a year ago," Garber said. The team will use the Chivas USA name this year, then will get a new name and logo along with new owners. "When Angelica and I gained full operational control of the team for the first time 15 months ago, we were hopeful we would be able to turn it around," Vergara said in a statement. "However, there is only one Chivas de Guadalajara, and we have realized that it will require more time, further resources, and a level of commitment that would divert too much of our focus from our other business interests." Two former Chivas USA youth coaches, Daniel Calichman and Theothoros Chronopoulos, filed a discrimination lawsuit against the team last May in Los Angeles County Superior Court, claiming they were fired because they arent Mexican or Latino. "Its been resolved. Its no longer a pending case." Garber said. "It was resolved very recently." Slowed by injuries and never finding his way into Seattles defensive line rotation, Hill spent the majority of his rookie season as a spectator on the Seahawks sideline. That time spent watching and learning is finally paying off for Hill and the Seahawks.Hes more confident, sure. Hes healthy too now. He was banged up for a little while in there, Seattle coach Pete Carroll said. Were very fortunate that were coming together.Hill has quickly developed into an important part of Seattles pass rush that has improved dramatically the second half of the season. After having just 13 sacks in the first 10 games, the Seahawks have 20 sacks in the past five games. And Hill has been right in the middle of the improved quarterback chasing. Hill has been responsible for five of those 20 sacks.I didnt plan on being injured and stuff like that, but the more and more game experience I get the better I have a chance to be, Hill said. I just want to take advantage of all the opportunities Im getting. Even though Im playing a little bit better, I still feel I left a lot out on the field that I could have capitalized on.Hill has moved into the pass rushing defensive tackle role occupied a season ago by Clinton McDonald. Hill doesnt play a ton of snaps — hes been in for 45 per cent of the defensive plays this season — but when hes on the field the objective is simple: collapse the pocket and make the quarterback move around.Hill missed three games in the middle of the season with an ankle injury and Seattles pass rush picked up when he returned. He recorded his first sack in Week 12 against Arizona and had two sacks against San Francisco in Weeek 15.dddddddddddd Despite being blanked for the first 10 games, Hill is third on the team in sacks.Hes so explosive, so much quick twitch muscles that he could be one of the best inside rushers in the game right now. Hes figuring it out right now, Seattle defensive end Michael Bennett said. This is the best part of the year for him to finally get a chance. He got hurt early on and him getting the reps and doing it over and over and over and thats really what it is for him right now is being able to believe that he can do and go out there and play the way hes capable of playing.Part of Hills success can be attributed to Bennett, both during games and during the week. Bennett has spent time with Hill before and after practices this season passing along tips in rushing the quarterback to help the youngster. Its also helped grow the chemistry of how Seattles pass rush can best work.Last Sundays win over Arizona was a perfect example. On the play Hill got his one sack, Bennett occupied a pair of offensive linemen. That gave time for Hill to loop around unblocked and sack Arizonas Ryan Lindley. You have to rush as four. You cant go in there and rush by yourself. You have to have all four guys on the same page, Hill said. Youve got to have a feel. Its like a quarterback and his receivers being on time with the timing. All four guys have to know how each person rushes.NOTES: Carroll said it remains unlikely that WR Jermaine Kearse (hamstring) would return for Sundays finale vs. St. Louis. ... LT Russell Okung has a really good chance to get back this week. Okung missed last weeks game with a bruised lung. ... CB Tharold Simon suffered a shoulder injury vs. Arizona, but there is a chance he could play vs. the Rams. This will be an amazing recovery if he is able to do it, Carroll said.___Online: AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL Cheap China Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys Cheap NHL Jerseys Cheap Jerseys From China China NFL Jerseys Cheap Jerseys Cheap Jerseys ' ' ' |

LONDON - A new womens grass-court tennis tournament will be held on the Spanish island of Mallorca starting in 2016. The 32-player event will take place two weeks before Wimbledon. WTA chair and CEO Stacey Allaster says the tournament "will strengthen the grass-court season leading up to Wimbledon." The complex on Mallorca — home to Rafael Nadal — will have five natural grass courts. Construction and maintenance will be in collaboration with The All England Lawn Tennis Club, which runs Wimbledon. The Mallorca tournament will be played in the second week of an expanded three-week grass-court swing between the French Open and Wimbledon. Jose Mauri AC Milan Maglia . Too strong. Too fast. Baylor was too much of just about everything for Creighton and Doug McDermott to handle. And because of it, the sixth-seeded Bears are rolling out of Texas toward California and the NCAA tournament Sweet 16 after an impressive 85-55 win Sunday night in the West Regional. Isaiah Austin and Canadian Brady Heslip each scored 17 points and Baylor used suffocating defence to shut down McDermott, ending the career of one of college basketballs most prolific scorers. "We did a good job making it tough on him," Bears coach Scott Drew said. McDermott, who averaged 27 points this season, finished with 15 but had just three in the first half as Baylor built a 20-point lead. McDermott ranks fifth on the NCAA career scoring list with 3,150 points. Baylor (26-11) had five players score in double figures and shot 64 per cent in one of the dominant performances of the tournament. The rest of the West bracket may want to pay attention to this one. A team that looked like a wreck six weeks ago with a 2-8 start in the Big 12 is brimming with confidence to match all that muscle in the lineup. "We take pride in people hating on us, and we love proving people wrong," Austin said. "Everybody has bought into the one goal that we have in mind and that is winning a national championship." Baylor plays No. 2 seed Wisconsin on Thursday in Anaheim. In Baylors two previous trips to the Sweet 16, it fell one game short of the Final Four. McDermott carried the Bluejays back to the round of 32 for the third year in a row, and had done it in spectacular style, leading the nation in scoring with a sublime shooting touch and uncanny knack to slither his way through defenders for layups and putback baskets. McDermott spurned the chance to turn pro after last season, and this was the year the Bluejays and their senior-laden lineup were expected to drive Creighton farther into the NCAA tournament than any Bluejays team before them. But Baylors defence gave him nothing: neither space to shoot nor even chances for his teammates to pass him the ball. And for all the talk about Creightons maturity and bonding, Baylor made the Bluejays look small and slow. "This is the worst weve played all season, and it just stinks that its the last one.dddddddddddd But that doesnt take away from all my memories here. Its tough to go out this way," McDermott said. Baylor came out blazing from long range, knocking down five 3-pointers in the first 7 minutes. Kenny Chery of Montreal made three and when Heslip, who was 0 for 6 in Fridays win over Nebraska, swished his first against Creighton, he mockingly shook the fingers on both hands as he loped back down the court. "We were just expecting it to be a fight, to be honest," said Heslip, whos from Burlington, Ont. McDermott, meanwhile, struggled to find any kind of space inside or out against Baylors zone defence and badly misfired on his first attempt, a baseline shot that missed everything. This rout was just beginning. The Bears flexed their muscle early and often with a lineup built for the rigours of the Big 12. Austin is 7-foot-1 and he teamed with 6-10 forward Cory Jefferson in the frontcourt. When Creighton missed a shot, the typical result was three Bears under the basket with no Bluejays around. Baylors bench was just as intimidating. When reserve forward Rico Gathers pushed his 6-foot-8, 270-pound frame through the lane for a layup, two Creighton defenders were powerless to stop him. By the time Baylor had built a 20-point halftime lead, McDermott had taken only three shots, made one and had two fouls. "We knew we had them on their heels," Austin said. "We wanted to step on their throat." Even when Creighton got a spark — Ethan Wragge made two 3-pointers early in the second half — Baylor simply matched basket for basket, denying any hopes of a rally. Soon it was showtime as Baylors lead kept growing. Jefferson slammed down an alley-oop dunk for a 58-34 lead with just more than 12 minutes to play. Gathers added another rim-rattler a few minutes later, his broad shoulders soaring to the basket to punctuate the night. When McDermott left the game with 2:31 to play, he hugged his father, Creighton coach Greg McDermott, before retreating to the bench and burying his face in a towel. "Im not sure it was Baylor being that good or us being that bad," Greg McDermott said. "Over the course of the season youre going to have a few clunkers. We had one at the wrong time." MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee Bucks centre Larry Sanders will be out until at least the All-Star break this weekend with a fractured bone near his eye. Coach Larry Drew announced before the teams game Monday night against the Boston Celtics that he was told earlier in the day that Sanders was injured when he was elbowed in the right eye by Houstons James Harden as the two went for a rebound early in Saturday nights game. Drew believes the fracture is in the orbital bone, and adds that Sanders is experiencing double vision in the eye. Sanders missed nearly two months early this season after tearing a thumb ligament in a fight at a Milwaukee night club. Zaza Pachulia was scheduled to start in Sanders absence against Boston. Asics Running Shoes Clearance .J. -- Mike Goodsons season is over just as it was getting started. No other team in the league has experienced more uncertainty at quarterback the past few years than the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Buck Pierces time was marred by several injuries while none from the cast of backups, from Alex Brink and Joey Elliott to Max Hall, Justin Goltz, and Jason Boltus, managed to distinguish themselves during their opportunities for the team. Even the Ottawa Redblacks, not yet having played a game, appear better set behind centre. Compared to some of Winnipegs rotation of quarterbacks the past couple seasons, the expansion team has an embarrassment of riches at the position with veterans Henry Burris and Kevin Glenn, and two-year pro Thomas DeMarco. With the trade and subsequent contract extension for former Saskatchewan Roughriders QB Drew Willy, Bombers GM Kyle Walters is hoping all his QB problems are in the past. After losing out to Zach Collaros and Hennry Burris just days before, Walters finally landed a QB to be penciled in atop his depth chart heading into the 2014 season; but will Willy stay there, and more importantly, will he find success where so many before him have faltered? The 27-year-old is light on experience, having started just two games in his career behind Darian Durant in Saskatchewan, but has shown potential in his limited action.dddddddddddd Willy threw just 52 passes last season, going for 473 yards and four touchdowns to just one interception. He saw a little more action last year, his first in the league, and for his career is 101-147 for 1,182 yards and nine touchdowns to five interceptions. His resume is light, but theres enough to get excited about with the Buffalo product. The Rouge asks: Is Drew Willy the answer at quarterback for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers? As always, its Your! Call. West Lafayette, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Melvin Gordon rushed for 205 yards and a touchdown and No. 25 Wisconsin beat Purdue 34-16 on Saturday. Joel Stave passed for 219 yards and two touchdowns in the win, most of it in the first half as the Badgers (7-2, 4-1 Big Ten) played their first game as a ranked team in over a month. They overcame a shaky start to the second half, which included Gordons fumble and failed fourth-down run and a near-onside kick recovery by the Boilermakers after Austin Applebys 79-yard touchdown pass to Akeem Hunt got them within 24-16. Appleby passed for 204 yards for Purdue (3-7, 1-5), which has lost three in a row. Paul Griggs kicked three field goals in the loss, including two over 50 yards. The Badgers have beaten Purdue nine straight times, including six in a row in West Lafayette. After dropping out of the ranking following a loss to Northwestern on Oct. 4, Wisconsin held Maryland to a season-low seven points and handed Rutgers its first shutout in 12 years, moving to No. 2 in the nation in scoring defense. The offense nearly coughed up the lead in this one when a fumble and failed fourth-down conversion led to 10 points for Purdue early in the third quarter, trimming the Badgers 24-6 halftime lead. Gordon lost the ball on the first play from scrimmage, leading to Griggs 52- yard field goal. Gordon was then stopped on a 4th-and-1 try at the Purdue 16 and Appleby connected with Hunt on a 79-yard touchdown three plays later to get the Boilermakers within 24-16. It nearly got worse for Wisconsin when a surprise onside kick was recovered near the sideline by Purdues Raheem Mostert. But the play was reversed after a replay review. Boilermakers safety Landon Feichter later intercepted Stave at the Purdue 15, but they punted and Tanner McEvoy gave Wisconsin a 31-16 lead with a 13-yard touchdown run to cap a four-play drive. Rafael Gaglianones 31-yard field goal capped a 12-play drive to open the fourth quarter and made it 34-16 Wisconsin. Earlier, Griggs kicked a 40-yard field goal on Purdues first drive, but Gordons 14-yard touchdown run later in the first put the Badgers on top for good. After Griggs nailed a 53-yarder on the first play of the second quarter, Gaglianone made a 24-yarder for Wisconsin. Staves 27-yard touchdown pass to Gordon later in the second made it 17-6 and his 9-yard throw to Alex Erickson gave the Badgers a 24-6 lead at halftime. The Tampa Bay Lightnings star forward told reporters after Mondays practice that he is targeting the teams Saturday game against the Detroit Red Wings for his long-awaited return. Nike Free Flyknit Chukka Nederland . PETERSBURG, Fla.MINNEAPOLIS - After joining Cleveland for the final month, Jason Kubel found himself in a familiar place in Minnesota when the Indians finished the regular season. During that series with the Twins, Kubel stopped in the home clubhouse to see some of his old teammates and coaches. Manager Ron Gardenhire got to the point. "I said, Why arent you in this clubhouse?" Gardenhire recalled. "He said, Well, lets talk over the winter. And we talked." Less than three months later, Kubel signed with the Twins. Hell be at spring training next month on a minor league contract, but if he is added to the 40-man roster he would receive a $2 million base salary. There are bonuses built in, too: $150,000 each for 300 and 350 plate appearances and $200,000 for 400 plate appearances; and $150,000 each for 30 and 60 days on the active major league roster, excluding time on the disabled list, and $200,000 for 90 days on the active major league roster. Thats an extra $1 million waiting for him if hes healthy and productive enough to re-establish himself as an everyday player. "The guy can put some swings on the ball and put it in the seats. He can carry a ballclub," Gardenhire said. "Im not saying hes here to do that, but I think hes going to be very valuable for us if he comes and proves that in spring training that hes still good and healthy." Kubel isnt the only former Twins standout whos back for a second time. Shortstop Jason Bartlett was signed to a minor league deal and will be in camp vying for a spot. General manager Terry Ryan also confirmed over the weekend the team has maintained interest in two-time American League Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana, who is recovering from a second surgery on the left shoulder that kept him out of the 2011 and 2013 seasons. Santana probably wont be ready to pitch until the summer, and hed surely have other teams to pick from. But the theme the Twins are following is clear: leadership ability and winning experience, two important traits theyve largely lacked the last three years while losing at least 96 games each time. Bartlett and Kubel are past their prime, a decline accelerated by injuries, but if theyre healthy they could help enhance the roster. Pedro Florimon is a slick fielder, buut even for a shortstop a .dddddddddddd78 career on-base percentage wont cut it for long. If the 27-year-old wins the job again, Bartlett could still be in line for a utility spot, competing with Eduardo Escobar. "I feel like a rookie again," Bartlett said over the weekend at the teams annual fan festival, held at Target Field for the first time. Bartlett was traded to Tampa Bay before the 2008 season. He went to the World Series that fall and had a career year in 2009. But his production sharply decreased in 2010, and he was traded to San Diego. Limited by a sprained right knee in 2012, Bartlett was released that summer batting just .133. He didnt play at all in 2013, and he thought his career could be over. He had surgery to fix the knee, though, and the 34-year-old said hes been working out pain-free since. Before choosing the Twins, however, he had to talk to the boss. "He was concerned about if he had a chance to make the club, and I said, Absolutely. You come into my spring training and you prove youre healthy, I know youre a winner. I know you know how to play," Gardenhire said. Kubel signed shortly after Bartlett. "Jason Tyner called me and said, Whats going on? Is this an old-timers game? Do I need to pack my bag or what?" Bartlett said. "That was funny. We have good memories here." Including, of course, the 2006 season when the Twins went 96-66, one game behind the New York Mets and Yankees for the best record in baseball. "We both have been on this team when we were doing well," said Kubel, who also spent time at TwinsFest. "They kind of wanted to bring that attitude back. Theyve got the right guys to do that with." Kubel signed with Arizona for two years and $15 million prior to the 2012 season, but last year he was bothered by knee and quadriceps trouble on his left leg and stumbled to career lows in every significant statistical category. He was designated for assignment and then traded to Cleveland. Just two years ago, though, he hit 30 homers and drove in 90 runs for the Diamondbacks. There are openings in the outfield for him to fill. "It just didnt work out last year," he said. "Healthy now. No issues. ... Im just really excited to get started." The Bruins got their power play going and got under the Canadiens skin as they won 4-2 to push Montreal to the edge of a playoff precipice. "I dont think you can look at tonight and say all of a sudden we found our game." said Julien. "I think we were better tonight but theres another game to win and, Im being honest here, its not going to be easy." Game 6 of the second-round playoff series is Monday in Montreal with the Canadiens needing a win to remain alive -- undoubtedly regretting the Game 4 overtime loss at the Bell Centre that rejuvenated the Bruins. Montreal, which outshot Boston 31-30, has trailed Boston three games to two five times before and come back to win three of those series. After a five-year post-season drought with the man advantage against the Habs, Boston broke the power-play hoodoo through back-to-back strikes by Reilly Smith and Jarome Iginla. Tomas Plekanec was in the penalty box for both goals. "I thought we were intent when we started the game but their power play gave them a lot of momentum and confidence," said Montreal coach Michel Therrien. Boston was 0-for-10 in the series on the power play and amazingly had not scored in 39 tries with the man advantage against Montreal in the post-season since Game 2 of their 2009 Conference quarter-final. "Our power play was due," Julien said by way of understatement. After the first period, the talk was of the need for more intensity, winning more battles and making stronger plays on the power play. It worked and Boston had the rare luxury of playing with a lead. The Bruins led for 46 minutes 40 seconds Saturday, some four times the 11:39 they were ahead during the first four games of the series. The Canadiens have held the lead for 106:11 of the series. Carl Soderberg and Loui Eriksson also scored for the Bruins, who got a strong physical game from Milan Lucic. The hulking winger cruised the ice like a shark, looking for someone to take a piece out of. A late P.K. Subban goal made the score closer than the game actually was. Brendan Gallagher also scored for Montreal. Goalie Carey Price said the Habs are up for the elimination challenge. "You back any animal into a corner, its going to be desperate," he said calmly. "I think were going to be a desperate hockey club coming into next game and I think were excited for the challenge." Game 7, if needed, would be next Wednesday in Boston. The Canadiens will need to take a deep breath before the puck drops at the Bell Centre with their season on the line. "Frustration or not, weve got to make sure we play with some more composure," said a tight-lipped Therrien. Subban complained after the game of being sprayed with water twice from the Boston bench late in the game. After raising the issue in his post-game scrum, he tried to downplayed the antics but it clearly bothered him. "It hit me in the visor. I couldnt even see the last minute and a half out there," he said. "So I was pretty upset about that ... Im sure if that was me that did it, it would be a different story. Id probably be on the news for the next three days." Therrien, who looked like he had sucked a lemon prior to taking the podium, had little to say about hockeys version off Watergate.dddddddddddd "Yeah, we saw that," he said when asked about the water spraying. "I dont want to comment on that," he added when pressed on the matter. Julien said he didnt see it and wouldnt condone it. After two games that features a total of five penalties, the referees remembered to bring their whistles with them Saturday and called 11 penalties. Montreal was 2-for-5 on the night with the man-advantage but was 0-for-3 in the first period. "I strongly believe that if we would have gotten a goal on one of those first power plays, it could have been the difference in the game," said Subban. Therrien, meanwhile, said his team had to be better five-on-five. The line of Soderberg, Eriksson and Matt Fraser finished with two goals and three assist and was plus-six. The Bruins third line has now scored three of Bostons last five goals with Fraser accounting for the overtime winner last Thursday in Montreal. Soderberg was awarded the Bruins jacket, a hand-me-down from Boston legend Johnny Bucyk, as the teams player of the game. The capacity crowd of 17,565 at TD Garden had plenty to cheer about. Boston looked focused and physical, outhitting Montreal 39-29. Plus the Bruins managed to plug up Montreals shooting lanes. "It was one of those games where were just on the wrong side of the puck all night," said Canadiens captain Brian Gionta. Smith hit the post before either team registered a shot. The Bruins went ahead at 13:20 of the first period after Eriksson beat the lumbering Douglas Murray to the puck behind the net and sent it straight back to Soderberg, who banged the puck in off Prices pad for his first career playoff goal. It came on Bostons sixth shot of the night. It was a good omen for the Bruins, given the team scoring first won the first four games of the series and the Bruins were 5-0 in the playoffs -- and 41-6-2 during the regular season -- with the first goal. Then came the power play breakthrough as the Bruins dominated the second period. After some good puck movement had the Canadiens running around, a Dougie Hamilton shot from the point deflected in off Smiths foot. Then, after a Bruins faceoff win, a nifty Torey Krug pass from the wall found Iginla all alone and he snapped a shot past Price. Boston was bossing the game and the Habs began to lose some of their composure. But Plekanec made up for some of that time in the penalty box when he snapped a shot from the faceoff dot that went through a Boston defencemans legs before rattling in off Gallagher at 14:39 on the power play to cut the lead to 3-1. The five-foot-nine Gallagher got thumped in the corner seconds before on the play, but picked himself up and got in front of the goal to be in position to tip the puck in. The goal ended Tuukka Rasks shutout streak of 122 minutes six seconds. The Bruins kept up the pressure in the third, coming at the Canadiens. Boston calmly blunted Montreal attacks and then moved the puck up ice with speed and purpose. Erikssons goal, with 5:48 remaining, came on a three-on-two complete with some slick passing. Price denied Fraser but was powerless to stop Eriksson, who skated around him until he had a clear shot at an empty net. With Matt Bartkowski off for holding and Price on the bench, Subban scored from the point to make it 4-2 with 2:29 remaining. Therrien brought back Brandon Prust, who had sat out the last two games. Making way was veteran Daniel Briere who had played under 10 minutes each of the last three contests. Canadas Brad Jacobs looks to make it a gold medal sweep in curling for Canada when he takes on two-time world champion David Murdoch of Great Britain in the mens final on Friday. Catch all the live streaming action at 8:30am et/5:30am pt. Canada finished the roundrobin in second place with a 7-2 mark, putting together six straight wins heading into the playoffs. In Wednesdays semifinal against China, the foursome from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario scored three in the seventh end to snap a 4-4 tie and then punched their ticket to the final with three more in the ninth frame for a 10-6 victory. "It was definitely our best game," said Canadian third Ryan Fry. "We have a knack of being able to elevate our game in the big games. I dont know what the recipe is for that but we brought it for that game." Great Britain wrapped up the roundrobin in fourth spot with a record of 5-4, good enough for a berth in a tiebreaker with Norways Thomas Ulsrud. Trailing by one in the 10th end, Murdoch came through with a deuce and a 6-5 win to advance to a semifinal matchup against top-ranked Niklas Edin of Sweden, who finished with an 8-1 record. Once again trailing by one heading to the last frame, Murdoch again scored a deuce for a 6-5 win and a guaranteed medal for the first time in his third trip to the Olympics. "It is by far the best day I have ever had," said Murdoch after the win. "In past Olympic Games, I have been so close. Throughout my whole career, its the Olympic Games that matter and I have always been an inch away." Canada faced Great Britain in the roundrobin on Saturday and came away with a 7-5 decision in a game that came down to a steal by Jacobs in the 10th end. Sweden faces China in the bronze medal game at 3:30am et/12:30am pt. On Thursday, Canadas Jennifer Jones won the gold medal on the womens side with a 6-3 win over Swedens Margaretha Sigfridsson. Poile announced Monday that Barry Trotz, the NHLs longest tenured head coach with one team, would not be back for a 16th season after the Predators missed the post-season for a second straight year. A few hours later, Poile said at a news conference a few hours later that wont get it done. "This is a wakeup call for everybody in our organization," Poile said. "Its a wakeup call for me. Get out of your comfort zone. Its going to be different here. Theres going to be a new coach in charge. ... Its going to be a difference voice and its going to be a different direction. And hopefully ... the foundation Barrys presented here for the next coach will take us to a higher level." Trotzs contract expires June 30, and the Predators offered him a job in their hockey operations department. The two-time Jack Adams finalist made it clear in a very emotional news conference before Poile spoke that he appreciated the offer but wants to keep coaching. "I love Nashville, but now Im going to have to beat you," Trotz said with a smile. Poile refused to put a timetable on hiring a new coach or what type coach he wants. This will be his first search since hiring Trotz in August 1997 when the Predators were gearing up for the expansion franchises debut season in 1998-99. Trotz said he had not been contacted by any other teams when he spoke to reporters, but Poile said he will let the coach out of his contract instantly for another coaching job. Predators captain Shea Weber said the only NHL coach hes ever played for wont be out of a job long. "His resume speaks for itself," Weber said. Still, missing the playoffs for consecutive seasons for the first time since 2001-02 and 2002-03 was too much for a franchise that needs to reach the post-season to sell tickets and generate crucial revenue. "We didnt win this year, we didnt win last year," Trotz said. "Theres no excuse. I expect us to be in the playoffs, the Nashville Predators expect us to be in the playoffs.dddddddddddd We didnt make it this year, so Im good with it." Trotz said losing goaltender Pekka Rinne, a two-time Vezina Trophy finalist, for 51 games to an E. coli infection in his surgically repaired left hip "blew a hole" through the Predators this season. Poile said having a healthy Rinne or even two more shootout wins after going 2-9 would have gotten Nashville into the playoffs. Poile said that would have at least delayed this coaching change. But the general manager noted that hes been thinking about needed changes since the Predators missed what both he and Trotz thought was their best chance at a Stanley Cup in 2011-12. That team lost 4-1 to Phoenix in the Western Conference semifinals. Trotz coached 1,196 games with Nashville, second only to Greg Popovich of the NBAs San Antonio Spurs for longest active coaching tenure in the four major sports. He is the only NHL coach to take his team to the playoffs in seven of eight seasons between 2003-04 and 2011-12, which included two conference semifinals. He was 19-31 in the post-season. But the Predators have been in transition since losing defenceman Ryan Suter to Minnesota as a free agent in July 2012 and matching a 14-year, $110 million offer sheet to keep Weber. Poile said hes been rebuilding the Predators "on the fly" over the past year. He said upcoming changes will not include Weber, who will remain with the Predators. With the lockout shortening the season, the Predators posted their first losing record (16-23-9) since 2002-03. Nashville spent more than $36 million on five free agents last July. Goalie Carter Hutton did post 20 wins in Rinnes absence, but the rest of the spending spree didnt produce the offence they wanted. With Rinnes hip keeping him sidelined, they finished 10th in the West going 38-32-12 with 88 points. "In the end, its our fault he got fired," said forward Patric Hornqvist, "and obviously thats a huge responsibility for us and we have to be better next year." BOSTON -- Jarome Iginlas slow start in Boston is now a distant memory. Iginla scored two goals, Tuukka Rask stopped 33 shots, and the Eastern Conference-leading Bruins extended their winning streak to nine games with a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Wild on Monday night. Signed during the off-season to replace departed free agent Nathan Horton on the Bruins top line, Iginla has fit in perfectly. "We lose a guy that we thought would be back for us, in Horton. That was a big hole to fill," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "Hes come in and filled that hole really well. You mention the stats, he brings us the same thing the other guy did with his size and scoring ability. Hes done a great job. "Were talking about a veteran here with tremendous leadership qualities. Hes certainly been a great asset to our team." Iginlas scoring didnt come for a while with Boston. He didnt net his first goal until his ninth game, and had just five in his first 29. But now he is scoring goals even when his shots are blocked. The Bruins grabbed a 1-0 lead 3:52 into the second period on Iginlas first of the game. His shot was deflected by the stick of defenceman Jonas Brodin and popped into the air. Wild goalie Darcy Kuemper appeared to lose sight of the puck, and it bounced between his pads just before he dropped. Iginla was smiling along the boards when his teammates came to congratulate him. Iginla added an empty-netter, his team-leading 25th goal, with 65 seconds to play. "It was a very fluky, fortunate bounce goal. Ill definitely take them," he said, flashing a similar smile while standing in front of his locker. The Bruins increased their conference lead to five points over idle second-place Pittsburgh by posting their longest winning streak since a 10-game run in November 2011. Boston is 12-1-2 in its last 15 games. Loui Eriksson and Reilly Smith also scored for Boston, which beat the Wild at home for the first time after losing the first six meetings. The Bruins are 3-10 overall against the Wild, who began play in the 2000-01 season. "They were real consistent in how they played," Minnesota defenceman Keith Ballard said. "Theyve got good balance to their lineup." Jason Pominville had the only goal for Minnesota, which lost for the fifth time in six games, but three of those defeats came in shootouts. Kuemper made 25 saves. About 2 1-2 minutes after Iginlas first goal, Rask robbed Mikko Koivu with a glove stop on a shot from in front. He also made a right-pad save on Nino Niederreiters shot from the left circle with just over 2 1-2 minutes left in the game. "Our goaltending has been outstanding all year without question," Iginla said. "They give us a chance every night with big momentum shifts. We also feel as the game goes on we can start playing physical to start taking over the game and try to wear teams down." Rask played like what the Wild expected to face. "He was very good. We knew that going into the game, and he was as good as people say he is," Koivu said. "He made some great saves." Boston made it 2-0 at 11:55 when Carl Soderberg circled the net and sent a backhanded pass across the crease and through a group of players to Eriksson, who one-timed it into the net. Pominville cut it to 2-1 with 1:26 left in the second. He unloaded a slap shot, and the blade of his stick broke. It flew toward Rask as the puck sailed by his glove inside the near post. Smith scored off the rebound of Bergerons shot, making it 3-1 at 7:50 of the third. NOTES: Bruins defenceman and captain Zdeno Chara will turn 37 on Tuesday. ... Boston D Johnny Boychuk missed the game because of a lower-body injury. He went into the boards awkwardly Saturday in a win against Carolina and was helped to the bench, favouring his right leg. He returned and blocked a shot with that leg on his next shift and went to the bench slowly again. He tested the leg Monday morning and said it was too sore for him to play. ... The Bruins have never scored a power-play goal against the Wild, going 0 for 36. Boston had no power plays in the game. ... Iginla became the 55th player and the fifth active one to play in 1,300 NHL games. Nike Air Max 90 Black Mens Cheap . BOSTON -- Lose the no-hitter, win the game. Thats a trade Anibal Sanchez and the Detroit Tigers were happy to make to take the lead over the Boston Red Sox in the AL championship series. Sanchez and four relievers came within two outs of the first combined no-hitter in post-season history, striking out 17 to beat Boston 1-0 in the series opener on Saturday night. "I wasnt worried about a no-hitter," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "Would have been nice. There were several guys involved. But it worked out well for us." Sanchez struck out 12 -- including a record-tying four in the first inning -- but also walked a season-high six and was pulled after six innings and 116 pitches. Al Alburquerque, Jose Veras, Drew Smyly and Benoit stretched the no-hitter through eight innings. With one out in the ninth, Daniel Nava lined a single to centre field off Joaquin Benoit to end Detroits bid for the third post-season no-hitter ever. Stephen Drew flied out to right and, with the potential tying run on second, Xander Bogaerts hit a game-ending popout to shortstop that put the Tigers ahead in the best-of-seven series. Bostons Clay Buchholz will face major league wins leader Max Scherzer in Game 2 on Sunday night. Jhonny Peralta had an RBI single off Jon Lester in the sixth for the games only run. Peralta, who missed most of August and September while serving a 50-game suspension for violating baseballs drug rules, was taunted with chants of "Steroids!" and "User!" as he looped a single to centre to bring home Miguel Cabrera. It was a day for pitching in the playoffs -- St. Louis beat the Dodgers 1-0 in the second game of the NLCS, marking the first time in post-season history two games ended by that score on one day. "That tells you the quality of pitching in the post-season," Leyland said. "Weve got to do a lot better with our opportunities, but in this one we were able to hold on." The majors highest-scoring team during the regular season, the Red Sox were shut out at Fenway Park in the post-season for the first time in 95 years. The ALs regular-season ERA champion, Sanchez loaded the bases in the sixth on three walks. But he struck out Stephen Drew to end the inning, coming off the mound with a celebratory arm pump and high leg kick. Alburquerque pitched a perfect seventh, Veras got two outs and Smyly retired David Ortiz on a harmless fly ball to centre to end the eighth. Drew kept the score close for Boston in the bottom of the eighth, racing into shallow centre field to make a juggling, over-the-shoulder catch on Prince Fielders looper with runners on second and third. Benoit struck out Mike Napoli to start the ninth before Nava singled to end the no-hit bid. "Whether it was Sanchez or every guy they brought out of the bullpen, it was power stuff," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "To chase a very good starter after six innings, I thought we succeeded in that right. Were down a run. That game is still very much in the balance with every time we come to the plate. ... We achieved what we set out to do and that was to get in the bullpen in the middle innings. And, unfortunately, it didnt work out." In all, Lester gave up six hits and a walk, striking out four in 6 1-3 innings. Two nights after Justin Verlander took a no-hit bid into the seventh to finish off Oakland in the AL division series, Sanchez had a similar effort against the Red Sox. His four strikeouts in the first inning -- thanks to a third-strike wild pitch to Shane Victorino -- tied the major league record for a post-season game set by the Cubs Orval Overall in the 1908 World Series. Its the first time in baseball post-season history a team has had back-to-back games in which its starting pitcher had a no-hitter through five innings. On a brisk night with the wind blowing in from centre, the Tigers got the only run they needed in the sixth after Cabrera drew a one-out walk and moved to second when Fielder was hit by a pitch. Victor Martinez hit a sharp grounder to short for the force at second, but he beat the relay throw to first by inches to keep the inning alive. Peralta then knocked a 2-2 pitch to centre to score Cabrera from third. Detroit threatened when Martinez doubled to lead off the fifth, but he was caught off second base on Omar Infantes sharp grounder to first. Alex Avila singled, and Infante took third when Victorino bobbled the ball in right. On Jose Iglesias grounder, third baseman Will Middlebrooks threw the ball home to retire the lead runner. Austin Jackson flied out to right, ending the inning. NOTES: Don Larsen threw a perfect game for the New York Yankees against Brooklyn in the 1956 World Series, and Roy Halladay pitched a no-hitter for Philadelphia in the 2010 NL division series. ... The Red Sox were shut out for only the second time in 78 post-season games at Fenway Park, the first since losing to the Chicago Cubs 3-0 in Game 5 of the 1918 World Series. ... No Tigers pitcher had ever struck out four batters in an inning before, regular season or post-season. ... Victorinos stolen base in the first gave the Red Sox seven in the post-season, tying a franchise record set in 2004. ... The Red Sox sent Sanchez to the Florida Marlins in the deal that brought Mike Lowell and Josh Beckett to Boston after the 2005 season. He was traded to Detroit last season. ... It was Lesters fourth Game 1 start, surpassing Roger Clemens, Pedro Martinez and Beckett for most in franchise history. ... The 17 strikeouts by Tigers pitchers tie the record for a nine-inning post-season game. It happened twice before. ... It was only Bostons second shutout in 78 post-season home games, according to STATS. The other was in the 1918 World Series, when the Cubs beat them 3-0 in Game 5. CALGARY -- A career night for Eric Nystrom was supposed to feel a whole lot better. Despite scoring four goals against his former team, Calgary got two goals from David Jones and the deciding shootout goal from Sean Monahan in the Flames 5-4 comeback victory over the Nashville Predators. "We had it in our hands and we let it slip away," Nystrom said quietly, as he sat dejectedly in his locker. Drafted 10th overall by the Flames in the 2002 NHL Draft, Nystrom had never scored more than twice in 457 career games. "Ive had some really bad luck this season so its nice to be rewarded but at the same time, it really means nothing when it comes to a win and a loss," he said. "Ill take the win every day of the week." Trailing 3-1 entering the third period, Calgary climbed back to within one on Jones first goal in 18 games at 1:24. After Nystrom restored the two-goal cushion at 10:47, the Flames answered right back less than two minutes later with Mikael Backlund deflecting in Kris Russells point shot for Calgarys third power-play goal of the night. Jones tied it at 13:36, deflecting Brodies shot over Devan Dubnyks shoulder. "It feels great. Weve been on the other end of this so many times so to come back twice from two goals down, that means a lot for our team," Jones said. In the shootout, it was tied 1-1 after three shooters, with Jiri Hudler scoring for the Flames and Roman Josi connecting for the visitors, when Flames coach Bob Hartley gave Monahan the tap on the shoulder. The Flames 19-year-old leading scorer made no mistake notching his third goal in six attempts this year -- all of them the deciding goal. "Huds came down and brought it to his backhand and something opened up so I tried to do the same thing and fortunately enough, I found a spot through his five hole," said Monahan, who says he enjoys having the game on his stick. "Its pretty crazy. The crowds pretty loud there. Its a little bit of pressure on you but as a hockey player, youve got to like being in those situations and thats something I like to do," Monahan said. Reto Berra clinched the win and improved to 4-0 in shootouts this season, sprawling acrobatically to get a pad on a deke from Ryan Ellis. Berra, 27, has yet to win a game in regulation in his first year in the NHL. Hes 6-14-2 with his other two victories coming in overtime. Despite having a big night, Jones was happy to watch the shootout from the bench. "I try to hide in that situation," said Jones with a chuckle. "I like the guys we have in it. They know what theyre doing and this Monahan kid is something else. "Once I knew he was going. I was ready to just get off the bench because I knew we were going to get the two points." Mark Giordano also scored for Calgary (18-27-7), which wins consecutive games for the first time since Dec. 12 and 14. The goal extends Giordanos points sreak to a career-high six-games (3-3-6). With the single point, Nashville (23-22- moved within seven points of one of the two wildcard spots in the Western Conference, currently held by Minnesota and Vancouver. But it was the point that they didnt get that the Predators were talking about. "Its frustrating," said Nystrom. "Three out of four on this road trip is good when you look at the big picture but right now were in such a race, we need every point that we can get." Nashville coach Barry Trotz pointed to Jones goal early in the third as the one that turned the game around. "They scored the second goal, its 3-2 and they have all the momentum," said Trotz. "Then we played losing hockey where were trading chances. Thats now how you play. The whole game and the momentum changed on the second goal." Nystrom entered the night with one goal in his previous 19 games, but he wasted little time giving Nashville the early lead as he fired a shot past Karri Ramo from the slot just 1:51 into the game. Nystrom made it 2-1 1:50 into the second then made it 3-1 five minutes later, tipping Paul Gaustads shot from deep in the corner over Ramos shoulder. Ramo was promptly pulled by Flames coach Bob Hartley after Nystroms third goal, leaving the game with nine saves on 12 shots. It was the first time Ramo had been pulled this season. "I went to Karri and I told him, Im trying to turn the game over. They were two flukey goals," Hartley said. "It seems that we were just falling into the hole that we were digging ourselves. Sometimes you need to change the momentum." Dubnyk was making his second start since being acquired from the Edmonton Oilers on Jan. 15 in a trade for Matt Hendricks. He had 27 saves while Berra, in relief, had 12. Notes: The Flames had multiple power-play goals for just the second time since Oct. 21. The last time they had two was Dec. 23... Nystrom had 19 goals and 20 assists in 204 games with Calgary over parts of four seasons... Paul Byron (foot) returned to the Flames line-up after missing one game.
