NASHVILLE -- Mike Fisher didnt let this tie last very long. Fisher scored his second goal of the game with 26.4 seconds left -- right after Los Angeles got even -- to give the Nashville Predators a 3-2 victory over the Kings on Saturday night. Fisher also assisted on Patrick Hornqvists first-period goal for Nashville, which snapped a five-game losing streak. Anze Kopitar and Jeff Carter scored for the Kings, who have lost two straight. The teams combined for three goals in the final 3:18. Fisher put Nashville ahead 2-1 with 3:18 left during a power play, scoring with a slap shot from the high slot that beat goalie Ben Scrivens low to the stick side. Nashville has at least one man-advantage goal in seven of eight games. Carter tied it with only 36.7 seconds to go after Scrivens was pulled for the extra attacker. But Fisher put the Predators back in front 10 seconds later when his shot from the left side just made it over the goal line. "Colin (Wilson) made a great play trying to take the puck to the net, and I was just trying to find a hole," Fisher said. "He found me in a great spot, and it just trickled through the goalie." Fisher led Nashvilles forwards with 21 minutes, 58 seconds of ice time. Los Angeles coach Darryl Sutter wasnt happy that his team allowed Fisher to get a shot off that close to the net. "Bad coverage on our part," he said. The goal was upheld by a video review. "From where I was, I didnt think it completely crossed, but the video has a better vantage point, and they can zoom in," Scrivens said. "A guy broke down the wall and threw it in front. They were able to get a stick on it and direct it on net. "I got a large chunk, but not enough. Its an extremely frustrating way to lose a hockey game." Hornqvist had given the Predators a 1-0 lead with 5:18 left in the first. Scrivens stopped Fishers shot from the high slot, but Hornqvist -- who was standing just outside the crease -- backhanded in the rebound for his eighth goal. Hornqvist hadnt scored a goal in six games. Kopitar then tied it at 7:05 of the second. With the Kings on a power play, Kopitar skated to the top of the right circle and beat goalie Marek Mazanec with a wrist shot that was tucked just inside the far post. Los Angeles hadnt scored on the power play in its previous five games. Mazanec finished with 26 saves and earned his first win since Nov. 27. "He made some timely saves when we needed him to and he was calm back there," Nashville coach Barry Trotz said. "From our standpoint, it was a combination of solid goaltending and a desperate competitive team going against a fresh, veteran team." Shea Weber led Nashville in ice time with 29:52 and posted an assist. "This was a huge game for us," Weber said. "We have been on a tough stretch this past year, but hopefully we can get it right now." NOTES: Kopitar has a three-game point streak. ... Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Jack Johnson scored the deciding goal in the ninth round of the shootout and Sergei Bobrovsky was stellar as the Columbus Blue Jackets ended a 13-game losing streak to the Chicago Blackhawks with a 3-2 victory on Saturday. The Blue Jackets seem to prefer playing more than the required 60 minutes as they went to their sixth straight beyond regulation (5-0-1). Each goaltender was perfect through four rounds before former Blackhawk Jeremy Morin beat Corey Crawford with a quick wrister. Andrew Shaw kept Chicago alive, however, as he snapped a shot over Bobrovskys glove. Brandon Saad, the Blackhawks eighth shooter, had Bobrovsky beaten, but his shot rang off the left post. Johnson followed by dragging Crawford out of position with a slick backhand-forehand move and wristed the shot into an open net to put Columbus ahead. Bobrovsky stood tall and sealed the win by denying Bryan Bickells shot from the slot. The Blue Jackets defeated the Blackhawks for the first time since a 4-3 win on Feb. 18, 2011. You want to measure yourself against the best, Johnson said. We havent beaten these guys in awhile so that felt good. Jack Skille and Kevin Connauton each scored in regulation and Bobrovsky turned aside 39 shots for the Blue Jackets, who have won eight of their last nine games. Patrick Sharp and Ben Smith tallied for Chicago, which entered with wins in 10 of its last 11 games. Crawford made 17 stops in his return to the ice after missing eight games with an ankle injury. I thought we did everything, but win that game, Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville said. Columbus had 1:55 of power-play time to start the third. David Savard skated across the blue line and slipped a pass up to Connauton, who wristed a shot from the left circle for a 2-1 lead just as the man advantage expired. At 8:49 of the third, Smith shuffled the puck past the goal line from the side of the net after Marcus Kruger fell into the crease skates first. The goal was initially waved off on the ice, but the call was overturned as video replay showed that Kruger did not kick the puck into the net. In overtime, Bobrovsky turned aside three Chicago offerings and Crawford made two stops to send the game into the shootout. After losing an edge and going hard into the end boards, Skille got up and raced to the front of the net, where he redirected Fedor Tyutins blast from the left point for a 1-0 Columbus lead with 2:32 left in the first period. Sharps shot from the left circle eluded Bobrovsky as the Blackhawks tied the game 7:27 into the second. The Blackhawks owned a 29-12 shot margin heading into the final stanza. Game Notes The Blue Jackets also defeated the Blackhawks at home for the first time since an 8-3 victory on Mar. 25, 2010, ending a nine-game drought ... Prior to the game, Columbus placed forward Boone Jenner on injured reserve. He is expected to miss 1-to-2 months with a stress fracture in his back ... Morin was traded from Chicago to Columbus in exchange for defenseman Tim Erixon on Dec. 14 ... The Blackhawks outshot the Blue Jackets, 41-19. Michael Kors Outlet 85% OFF . Nestor, 41, will chase a fifth tournament title when he and Zimonjic, seeded fifth, play either Jesse Huta Galang of the Netherlands and Frenchman Stephane Robert or Italys Fabio Fognini and Austrian Jurgen Melzer. Nestor and Zimonjic needed just over an hour to win their semifinal event after last week losing in the semifinal round at Monte Carlo to Americans Bob and Mike Bryan, the worlds top-ranked team. Nestor won the Barcelona title in 2004 and 2006 with Mark Knowles and in 2009 and 2010 alongside Zimonjic. Dodig and Melo lost to Nestor and his partner in last years quarter-finals. Nestor and Zimonjic won the doubles title in Sydney in January before dropping the Dubai final aa month later.dddddddddddd "We played a good match and its great to get to the final," said Nestor, with the win giving his team a bye in the upcoming Madrid Masters. "We played well in the first set and got a lead in the second. "We lost the game at 5-2 by getting a bit impatient but were able to creep back into it at the end." Nestor and Zimonjic earned the opening set on a break in the fifth game and also broke Melo in the fifth game of the second set. But leading 5-2, their play slipped somewhat, allowing their opponents to rally and save two match points along the way. Nestor closed out match with consecutive aces in the final game. "Weve been playing well since the start on the clay, we might even have won some games with luck," Nestor said. "But we are on good form and playing solid. GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- This is how Kansas coach Bill Self wants Andrew Wiggins to play every night. He knows Wiggins is capable of it. Wiggins had 26 points and 11 rebounds, the only Kansas player in double figures, as the 13th-ranked Jayhawks lost 67-61 to No. 19 Florida. It was the second straight road loss for Kansas (6-3), but a potential building block for Wiggins. He was the lone bright spot for an inexperienced team learning how to play together and handle tough environments. "What Andrew did, he competed," Self said. "He scored points, but he got rebounds and weve been on his butt about that. He made shots. Im glad he made them and all that, but thats not what Im glad he did. I thought he was more aggressive and competed more." Wiggins, the ultra-talented freshman guard from Canada who is widely considered one of the top picks in next summers NBA draft, posted his first double-double and set career highs in points and rebounds. "Even though we lost, we arent going to back down," Wiggins said. "We are fighting to the end. Its never good to lose, but we dont want it to affect the rest of the season. We have until March to come together." This one wasnt nearly as heart-breaking as Saturdays loss at Colorado, which hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to win 75-72. The Gators (7-2) went on a 21-0 run early and led by as many as 18 points in the first half. Scottie Wilbekin led the Gators with a career-high 18 points. "I think we should have had an electrical shortage and cancelled the game after (leading 10-3)," Self said. "We made a couple of shots and played pretty well the first four or five minutes. But we were awful after that. ... That was not a good team playing there at all, and when things started to go bad, we didnt do anything to stop it. That was frustrating." Self called several timeouts, but couldnt do anything to stop Floridas momentum. Surely Floridas four senior starters and playing at home were factors, especially when pitted against Kansas young lineup. "Im not sure young guys have ever faced a situation like that," Florida centre Patric Young said. "Weve been blown out before. Weve blown people out before. We know both sides of the spectrum. ... We did a great job turning them over." The Jayhawks committed 16 turnovers in the first 20 minutes -- as many as they had in any game this season. "Weve got to get everyone playing together," Self said. "I cant blame it all on youth. ... A lot of it may be youth, but I think we can still play better individually." Kansas clawed its way out of the huge hole and made it 60-55 on Wiggins 3-pointer with 55.8 seconds remaining. It was his second 3 in the final 1:20. Florida closed it out from the free-throw line -- barely. The Gators made 20 of 34 free throws, including nine of their final 11. Kansas got it as close as 65-61 with 10.9 seconds left, Floridas Kasey Hill ended any chance of a comeback by draining two free throws. The biggest issue for the Jayhawks was 24 turnovers. Many of those came in the decisive early run. Wiggins and fellow guards Wayne Selden Jr. and Frank Mason combined for 13 turnovers. Wiggins, though, made up for his miscues by getting four offensive rebounds, blocking two shots and make all eight of his shots from the foul line. He was 7 of 15 from the field, including 4 of 9 from 3-point range. "I didnt think Wiggins could shoot the ball that well," Young said. "I know he was a great player, but he really shot the ball well tonight." Michael Kors Outlet 2016 . Michael Kors Outlet . -- Nick Bjugstad snapped out of his scoring slump and spoiled Drew MacIntyres first NHL start.NEW YORK -- The Toronto Raptors are the only thing standing between the Brooklyn Nets and a perfect 2014. Patrick Patterson stole Deron Williams inbounds pass and made the go-ahead jumper with six seconds left, and the Raptors stopped a five-game winning streak by the Nets for the second time this month with a 104-103 victory Monday night. Toronto dropped Brooklyn to 10-2 in January and opened a 2 1/2-game lead in the Atlantic Division over the Nets, who would be on the doorstep of the division lead if they could solve their neighbours to the north. "These guys are chasing us but theyre putting it together. Theyre playing well," Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry said. "Were the only team that beat them in 2014. I mean, thats a tough team. They had the game and we made a play and we made a shot." Brooklyn had a three-point lead with 17 seconds left behind Paul Pierce in his best game with the Nets, but John Salmons scored on a drive with 12 seconds remaining before Brooklyn took its last timeout to move the ball into the frontcourt. Patterson stole the pass and fed Lowry, who got it back to Patterson for his jumper. Pierce was well off on a final attempt. "We knew they didnt have any timeouts. We guessed right and Patrick looked like Richard Sherman out there with that steal," Lowry said, referring to the Seattle Seahawks defensive back who attended the game with a number of his teammates. Lowry finished with 31 points and seven assists for the Raptors, who clinched a winning record in consecutive months for the first time since December 2009 and January 2010. Pierce scored 33 points, making seven three-pointers in a strong bounce-back performance after going just 2 for 10 in his emotional return to Boston on Sunday. He had the Nets in position to win after scoring their last nine points before Toronto stole it. "Last night was a tough game to play in, so many emotions," Pierce said. "It was good to just get some normalcy back today and I felt comfortable, relaxed. But it wouldve been better if we got the win today, though." The stunning turnaround deflated the crowd at Barclays Center for a back-and-forth game that drew a visit from several Seahawks, who will hold their Super Bowl media day Tuesday at the Nets last home, the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Sherman and Bobby Wagner ggrabbed a baseline seat in the first half, while Russell Wilson and other players sat above in a private box.dddddddddddd Jonas Valanciunas had 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Raptors, who played without injured leading scorer DeMar DeRozan. Terrence Ross, who tied a franchise record with 51 points and made 10 3-pointers Saturday, had a quiet 10 points on 3-of-9 shooting. But Toronto got a big boost from Patterson, who ditched the mask he began the game with for a recent broken nose and finished with 15 points off the bench. "This is all about our toughness, our resiliency," Patterson said, "no matter whos out there during the course of the game, no matter whos not playing." Andray Blatche scored 20 points for the Nets, who lost 96-80 in Toronto on Jan. 11, a night after they played two overtimes in a victory over Miami. Lowry scored six straight points before Amir Johnson made a pair of free throws during an 8-0 run that gave Toronto a 94-85 lead with about eight minutes to play. The Nets answered with nine in a row to tie it on Alan Andersons jumper, and after Valanciunas basket, Pierce nailed consecutive three-pointers to make it 100-96 with 2:37 remaining. "Paul played well," teammate Kevin Garnett said. "He totally carried us for that fourth quarter, that second half, and we all came in and just said at the end of the game weve got to make plays, weve got to close games out and tonight we didnt do that." Toronto cut it to one and had a chance for the lead when Lowry stole Williams pass intended for Pierce, but Williams redeemed himself by drawing an offensive foul on Lowry with 19 seconds left. Pierce then made two free throws, but the Nets couldnt overcome Williams next giveaway. "Two turnovers in the last minute of the game, its not what I typically do, but thats how it goes sometimes," Williams said. There were eight lead changes in an entertaining second quarter, two in the final 1.3 seconds. Andersons three-pointer put the Nets up by two, but Lowry beat the buzzer from beyond halfcourt to give Toronto a 57-56 halftime lead. NOTES: DeRozan had made 125 consecutive starts. ... Ross, DeRozan and the Nets Mirza Teletovic were all nominated for last weeks Eastern Conference player of the week award, which was won by Atlantas Paul Millsap. BRUSSELS, Belgium -- Romelu Lukaku scored a hat trick to lead Belgium 5-1 past Luxembourg in a World Cup warm-up game on Monday. The triple boosted Lukakus chances to be Belgiums striker at the World Cup after Christian Benteke withdrew injured almost two months ago. Belgium had gone four matches without a win but ended that run against its tiny neighbour. Lukaku opened the score in the 3rd minute, scrambled a second home in the 23rd and made it three with a solo effort in the 54th minute. The Everton forward was replaced on the hour. "It was a good performance," said Lukaku of his game in Genk. "What makes me happy is that we performed as a team." Substitute Nacer Chadli added a fourth in the 71st minute and Kevin De Bruyne finished off with a penalty in the 90th. Luxembourg had earlier scored their only effort through Aurelien Joachim in the 13th minute. In Brazil, the Red Devils will play Algeria, Russia and South Korea in Group H. The game was also noteworthy for the debut of Manchester United winger Adnan Januzaj, who only chose to play for the national team last month. With flowing one-touch football and moves on both sides of the pitch, he immediately had an impact. "He gives us an extra dimension," said coach Marc Wilmots, but warned Januzaj was still far off getting his spot on the starting lineup. "He faces a lot of competition." Belgium had Sammy Bossut in goal, who would normally be the fifth-choice keepers but because of injuries and an extended rest for No. 1 Thibaut Courtois, he had a winning debut. Simon Mignolet was still suffering from a sore muscle in his hip and Wilmots decided to rest him. Belgium plays Sweden on Sunday and Tunisia on June 7 in its final warm-up games ahead of leaving for Brazil. Belgium lineup: Sammy Bossut; Toby Alderweireld (46, Anthony Vanden Borre), Vincent Kompany (46, Daniel van Buyten), Thomas Vermaelen, Jan Vertonghen (77, Nicolas Lombaerts); Marouane Fellaini, Axel Witsel (46, Steven Defour), Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard (46, Adnan Januzaj); Romelu Lukaku (61, Divock Origi), Kevin Mirallas (46, Nacer Chadli). The off-season signings of wing players Thabo Sefolosha and Kent Bazemore, combined with the addition of rookie centre Adreian Payne, left no openings on the roster. Adidas Superstar 2 Moins Cher . Davis had 25 points, eight rebounds, a career-high six blocks and five assists to lead New Orleans to a 105-84 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats on Saturday night, its first win changing its nickname to Pelicans. ARLINGTON, Texas -- With one swing in the first inning, Nolan Arenado quickly took the drama out of whether he would match Colorados record hitting streak and set the Rockies up for another rout over Texas. Arenados two-run double in the first extended his hitting streak to 27 games, matching teammate Michael Cuddyers record streak from last year. It also put Colorado ahead to stay on way to its third lopsided victory over the Rangers in as many nights, 9-2 on Wednesday. "Nolan is one of those guys thats really locked in right now, and it was good to see him get that hit in the first at-bat," manager Walt Weiss said. "I think that kind of set the tone." That was the first of three hits for Arenado, who is hitting .364 (39 of 107) in the streak that started a month ago Friday. His streak is the longest for anyone 23 years or younger since Albert Pujols had a 30-gamer in 2003 when he was 23. "Its pretty cool, pretty cool," Arenado said. "Im trying to stay within myself, Im not trying to get too big, or trying to hit the home run. Im just trying to hit the ball hard. Im going to keep on saying that until the year is over." Carlos Gonzalez homered for Colorado, which has outscored Texas 29-5 in three games this week. The Rockies won 8-2 and 12-1 at home with a combined 34 hits before the teams shifted to Texas for two games. "Weve got to ride this wave while its going good," said Weiss, whose teams 22 wins are tied for the most in the majors. Every starter had a hit for the Rockies, who finished with 16 and got 12 of them in 3 2-3 innings off Colby Lewis (2-2). Jorge De La Rosa (4-3) struck out four and walked three. The lefty gave up two runs over six innings while winning its fourth consecutive start. Adrian Beltre homered for Texas and became only the fifth player in major league history with 100 home runs for three different teams. After not getting a hit until his fifth plate appearance Tuesday night, Arenado wasted no time Wednesday. His double followed consecutive two-out hits by MLB-leading hitter Troy Tulowitzki (.414) and Gonzalez. Lewis got the first two batters out in each of the first three innings before allowing multiple hits each time..ddddddddddddBut the Rockies failed to score in the second and again in the third, when Arenado was tagged out halfway between third and home by first baseman Prince Fielder after Colorado had two runners caught between bases. The last nine batters faced by Lewis had six singles in a row and consecutive sacrifice flies by Corey Dickerson and Tulowitzki before Gonzalez homered, his seventh of the season capping a five-run fourth to make it 7-0. Lewis had allowed 12 hits twice before, including against Colorado at home two years ago. "I got beat. Thats all there is to it," Lewis said. "I think Colorado just needs to leave town." Colorado had 13 hits before Texas finally got Michael Choices one-out single in the fourth. Beltre followed with his homer to straightaway centre, his second this season after hitting the first a night earlier. Beltre, in his fourth season with Texas, previously hit 147 homers for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1998-2004) and 103 homers for Seattle (2005-09). The other players with 100 homers for three different teams are Darrell Evans (Atlanta, San Francisco and Detroit), Reggie Jackson (Kansas City/Oakland, New York Yankees, California), Alex Rodriguez (Seattle, Texas and Yankees) and Jim Thome (Cleveland, Philadelphia, Chicago White Sox). Scott Baker, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Round Rock earlier Wednesday, pitched the final 5 1-3 innings for Texas. It was only Bakers fifth relief appearance in 167 career major league games, most with the Minnesota Twins from 2005-11 before the right-hander had Tommy John surgery in April 2012. He made three starts for the Chicago Cubs last September. "He came in and gave us a chance," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "He settled in and started getting some outs, but we wasnt able to get to them." NOTES: Rangers 2B Donnie Murphy left the game with a neck strain after tripping over first base trying to beat out a grounder to end the sixth. ... Colorado throws another lefty Thursday in Franklin Morales (3-1, 5.05 ERA). Weiss said Morales is finding his rhythm as a starter again after being a reliever the past 5 years. Colorado has won his last four starts after losing his first two. INDIANAPOLIS - Jadeveon Clowney wants NFL scouts to rethink their draft strategy. Instead of settling for one of those glitzy, franchise quarterbacks, hes urging teams to build a fast, physical defence that can stop all those high-powered offences, and he has the perfect suggestion about where to start. Himself. "Thats one of my goals here, to go No. 1," this years top-rated defensive end said softly Saturday at the NFLs scouting combine. "I came out of high school as the No. 1 player so I want to come out of here as the No. 1 guy." Nobody doubts the former South Carolina star has the physical tools to go No. 1 in May. He measured in Saturday at 6-foot-5 1/4, 266 pounds, with an 83-inch wingspan and hopes to finish the 40-yard dash in the 4.4s, maybe the low 4.5s if hes a little off. With numbers like that, its no wonder Clowney is projected to go in the top five in May. But going ahead of quarterbacks such as Johnny Manziel, Blake Bortles and Teddy Bridgewater will take a lot more than athleticism. The biggest questions Clowney will answer this week focus on his work ethic and desire, and it sure didnt help when he missed Friday nights first round of team interviews because of travel problems. He said he drove from Columbia, S.C., to Charlotte, N.C., to avoid one two-hour delay only to run into another 2 1/2-hour delay. While coaches and team executives may excuse Clowneys tardy arrival, they still need to find out whether theyll be drafting the guy who delivered that helmet-dislodging, highlight-making hit on Michigans Vincent Smith in the 2013 Outback Bowl or the guy critics believe was more concerned with protecting his draft stock than winning games in 2013. Clowney insisted he was the same guy, though he did admit he would have left school after his sophomore season — if NFL rules would have allowed it. "I believe I did work hard. You pull out any practice tape from last year, youll see that," Clowney said. "Ill tell everybody that. I will always be working hard. No matter where I end up I am going to work hard and give a team everything Ive got." The numbers and words seem to tell a different tale. He finished 2012 with 54 tackles and 13 sacks. And despite the lofty expectations from college football fans after that eye-popping hit, Clowney finished 2013 with 40 tackles and only three sacks. What happened is a matter of perception. Some believe Clowney did not go all-out following a public debate about whether it was even worth it for him to play in 2013. Try telling that to those who had to block Clowney. "I dont think he took a play off," Missouri tackle Justin Britt said. "If he did, I didnt see it." But inside the Gamecocks program, there were signs something was amiss. In October, coach Steve Spurrier expressed frustration that the injured Clowney waited too long to tell coaches he couldnt play. Then, this week, on the eve of the combine, Spurrier told NFL Network that Clowneys work ethic was "OK," rekindling talk about Clowneys desire to excel at football. Not surprisingly, it was still a hot topic when Clowney took the podium at Lucas Oil Stadium with a huge crowd of reporters seeking answers to the same questions as team executives. Clowney started the explanation by saying opponents relied on shorter, quicker passes to slow down South Carolinas pass rush and then defended his effort. "There were a lot of ups and downs, but we won eleven games, were 11-2, won our bowl game, finished No. 4 in the country for the first time in South Carolina history so I was pretty excited about the season," Clowney said. "I wasnt really worried about my stats, I just wanted to win." Instead, Clowney contends the bigger problem was the artificially high level of expectations going into the season. But now Clowney must convince coaches, scouts and team executives the guy they watched in 2012 was the same guy they saw on film in 2013 and will continue to be the same guy they can build a defence around. And to jump back up the draft board into position for the top spot, Clowney understands he has to convince teams he means what he says. "I just want to be the best, one of the greatest of all time," he said. "Coming out of high school, I said I wanted to be one of the best in college and I think I proved that. Going to the NFL, I want to be one of the best in the NFL, go down in history as one of the best, so I have another stepping stone in my way and hopefully I can take care of business and accomplish that in the NFL." OKLAHOMA CITY -- Blake Griffins last visit to his hometown resulted in one of the most forgettable games of a young career thats already been filled with highlights. Chris Paul sent him out as a winner this time. Paul scored 31 points, including the game-winning shot on a layup with 8.8 seconds left, and the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 100-98 on Wednesday night to stay in position for home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. "For me to come back and be able to play in front of family and friends is always fun," said Griffin, who was born and raised in Oklahoma City and played college ball at Oklahoma. "But most importantly were looking to get wins and this is a tough place to play and Im proud of the way my teammates played and we dug out a win." The Clippers needed the win to hang on to fourth place in the Western Conference standings. Fifth-place Memphis, which beat L.A. on Monday night, remains a half-game behind the Clippers after beating Phoenix 104-93 Wednesday night. Griffin had lost his first three NBA games in his hometown, getting a career-low seven points in a 114-91 blowout loss last month. In that game, the Thunders Kendrick Perkins set the tone by hitting Griffin in the face on a first-quarter foul that also earned him a technical. On Wednesday night, Griffin had 16 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists and provided some highlight material, most notably a right-handed slam over Ibaka midway through the third quarter. He flirted with his second career triple-double before failing to register an assist in the fourth quarter. But thats when Paul, playing on the court where he once starred with the relocated New Orleans Hornets, was at his best. Pauls right-handed runner during a 15-4 run tied it at 80 before he came out for a brief rest, and Randy Foyes 3-pointer from the right side with 8:35 remaining put L.A. ahead 85-84. It was the first lead for the Clippers since it was 6-5 in the opening 4 minutes. Paul also had a tiebreaking 3-pointer and a floater along the lane to give L.A. a five-point lead and then the 6-foot point guard restored that edge by tipping in his own miss a few trips later. After Durants 3-pointer tied it at 98 with 32 seconds left, Paul drained the shot clock before coming up with the decisive basket -- the ball rattling around the rim before falling through. He got past Thunder defensive specialist Thabo Sefolosha and squeezed the ball onto the rim past the leagues leading shot blocker, Serge Ibaka, to put L.A. ahead. "Thats the reason hes the best down the stretch. He takes over games," Griffin said. "For that to be our guy, and he has the ball in his hands a lot, it just works out perfectly." Paul had 24 points in the second half, including 11 in the final quarter. "We just got lazy in the second half," said Thunder guard James Harden, who had 17 points off the bench. "We didnt come out with that aggression like we did in the first half to really control him, and he took advantage of it." Kevin Durant missed a 3-pointer that could have won it, hitting the back rim on a shot over Clippers centre DeAndre Jordan from the left wing. "He was playing off me a little and it got clogged up," Durant said. "I didnt want to risk a turnover, so I shot it." Durant led Oklahoma City with 22 points and Russell Westbrook scored 20. The West-leading Thunder (42-16) have lost four of their last six games and are one game ahead of second-place San Antonio. The Spurs (40-16) have the same number of losses and would win the tiebreaker against Oklahoma City for the No. 1 seed. The Thunder also fell two games behind idle Chicago (44-14) for the best record in the NBA. "Youre going to have to win games in the playoffs, no matter who you play. Were not worried about that," Harden said. "We just want to close these remaining games out and then go from there." Durant was 7-for-21 and Westbrook 3-for-14 as both Oklahoma City All-Stars struggled from the field. The rest of the Thunder roster was 21-for-41, for 51 per cent. "You know, we missed some good shots. I cant complain," coach Scott Brooks said. "Theres going to be nights you miss your shots. Kevins not going to miss that many shots. Russells not going to miss that many shots." Los Angeles won for the ninth time in its last 11 games -- all without top reserve Mo Williams, who is out with a sprained left big toe. That run followed a stretch when the Clippers lost 12 of 19. "Im proud of the way weve bounced back as a team through a lot of adversity and a lot of negative talk," Griffin said. "Everybodys just kind of batted it to the side and won ballgames." Schalke general manager Horst Heldt said Thursday that he made an offer to extend Rauls contract, which expires at the end of the season, in an email to the Spaniards representative, Gines Carvajal. "As planned, weve come a step further in February," Heldt said. The offer was made via email because there was no time to arrange a meeting between the parties due to their busy schedules, and Heldt doesnt expect a response before the end of March. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Rookie quarterback Blake Bortles has a number of things to work on before training camp. His contract is no longer on the list. Bortles, the first quarterback taken in last months NFL draft, signed a four-year deal worth more than $20.6 million Wednesday. The third overall selection, Bortles signed the fully guaranteed contract before the second day of a mandatory, three-day minicamp. Bortles received a $13.3 million signing bonus. The Jaguars got a team option for a fifth year. "I never thought about, I need to sign. I cant wait to sign. I need to hurry up to sign," Bortles said. "It is a once-in-a-lifetime thing, signing your first NFL contract. So that was something thats cool and Ill cherish forever. But its definitely in the past and forgotten about in my mind." With Bortles under contract, the Jaguars have two unsigned draft picks -- second-round receivers Marqise Lee and Allen Robinson. The team hopes to sign both by the end of the week. Bortles has been up and down during organized team activities, about what the Jaguars expected when they drafted him and planned to let him watch and learn in 2014 and take over next season. He continues to tweak his mechanics, mostly footwork, and his performances reflect that hes a work in progress. "Theres a lot to correct," Bortles said. "There are things that Im not doing well right now. But Im not worrying about it because Im trying to fix something else. It is a process. Its something that were working on thats going to take a while." Bortles played in a spread offence at UCF, rarely lining up under centre, so thats been a change. The biggest challenge has been getting his feet properly aligned. Hes accurate throwing to his left, but still has a tendency to step forward when throwing to his right. And its really affected his deep balls, which have fluttered and floated during OTAs and minicamp. "Youve got to make the stuff muscle-memory because what Ive been doing for 22 years isnt the right way," Bortles said. "But thats what Im used to doing, so Ive got to fix it. Its got to take time." The Jaguars arent worried. They drafted Bortles with an eye on the future. Jacksonville re-signed veteran Chad Henne and named him the starter even before selecting Bortles, and insist the plan is to hold the rookie until hes ready -- even if that means making him the backup until 2015. "Sometimes theres anxiety and sometimes hes pressing and trying to do too many things," coach Gus Bradley said. "Were just watching that and hell work through that. Some of the things he has to work through and he will." Bortles started 30 games at UCF before declaring for the NFL draft following his junior season. He went 22-5 as a starter, throwing for 7,598 yards with 56 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. He also ran for 561 yards and 15 scores. He realizes the transition from college star to NFL starter will take time and patience. "It was the same thing freshman year of college, so youre just starting all over again," Bortles said. "Its just everybodys bigger, stronger and faster. Youre going through the same thing. Youre learning the new playbook, youre meeting new people and you have different challenges. Youve got to be able to have that quarterback amnesia and move past things." Chris Harris Jr Broncos Jersey . Wait until next year comes around. TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reports that a meeting between the National Hockey league, the NHL Players Association and the International Ice Hockey Federation on Monday brought up the possibility of mixed teams being added to the next incarnation of the event. While nothing has been finalized, one of the proposals would see one or two mixed teams, with one possibly comprised of players from European nations to compete alongside the six traditional hockey powers: Canada, the United States, Russia, Sweden, Finland and the Czech Republic. A European All-Star team would comprise the best players from Slovakia, Switzerland, Germany, Latvia and other smaller hockey nations. The six nations slated to ice individual teams for the 2016 World Cup formed the field for the Canada Cup competitions, held regularly between 1976 and 1991. The field was expanded out to eight nations when the tournament was re-born as the World Cup of Hockey, including Germany and Slovakia for the 1996 and 2004 competitions. Switzerland and Slovakia were listed seventh and eighth in the world in the last IIHF rankings, released in April. Sloveenia and Latvia finished seventh and eighth, respectively, at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia while Austria, Slovenia and Norway also qualified for the 12-team Olympic tournament.ddddddddddddThe 16-team 2014 IIHF World Championship saw France, Denmark, Italy, Belarus, Germany and Kazakhstan compete. A European All-Star team could see a forward group including: Anze Kopitar (Slovenia), Thomas Vanek and Michael Grabner (Austria), Marian Hossa, Tomas Tatar and Tomas Jurco (Slovakia), Nino Niederreiter (Switzerland), Mats Zuccarello (Norway), Mikkel Boedker and Frans Nielsen (Denmark), Zemgus Girgensons (Latvia), Mikhail Grabovski (Belarus) amongst others. The defence corps could see the likes of Zdeno Chara, Andrej Sekera and Andrej Meszaros (Slovakia), Dennis Seidenberg and Christian Ehrhoff (Germany), Roman Josi and Mark Streit (Switzerland) while the goaltenders could include Jaroslav Halak (Slovakia), Jonas Hiller (Switzerland) and Frederik Andersen (Denmark). Two players from the European All-Star nations were also selected in the top 10 of the 2014 NHL Draft, including Edmonton Oilers centre Leon Draisaitl (Germany) and Winnipeg Jets draftee, left winger Nikolaj Ehlers (Denmark). MELBOURNE, Australia -- Even in a Grand Slam as unpredictable as this years Australian Open, the names in the womens semifinals may still prompt head-scratching among casual followers of tennis. With the three biggest stars of the womens game falling one by one -- top-seeded Serena Williams, followed by Maria Sharapova and two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka -- the door has opened for a first-time winner at Melbourne Park. Only fourth-seeded Li Na has won a Grand Slam before -- the 2011 French Open. Fifth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland was the 2012 Wimbledon finalist, but had never been beyond the quarters in Melbourne until she chipped, lobbed and sliced Azarenka off the court in a remarkable display of shot-making on Wednesday. Dominika Cibulkova, a diminutive Slovakian who dispatched Sharapova in the fourth round, has made just one Grand Slam semifinal before, while 19-year-old Eugenie Bouchard is a only playing her fourth major -- she didnt even make it out of qualifying at last years Australian Open. With such a golden opportunity for one of the four to now break through and capture a major, the deciding factor in the semifinals may be who can best handle the pressure. "Of course, a couple seeded (players) are out. Doesnt mean its going to be easier and you have a title right away," Radwanska said. "Its a bit more pressure. This is the semifinal of a Grand Slam." Radwanska should know. The draw opened up similarly at Wimbledon last year when Williams and Sharapova were upset early and Azarenka pulled out with an injury, leaving the Polish player as the highest remaining seed and the favourite to capture her first major. Radwanska, however, crumpled in the semifinals against Sabine Lisicki, blowing a 3-0 lead in the third set. She said its natural to feel nervous in these situations. "I think in the beginning of the match its always a little bit tough, especially its the first semifinal," she said. "But hopefully after few games Im going to be myself and play my best tennis." Radwanska faces Cibulkova in the semis -- a player shes beaten four times in five matches, including a 6-0, 6-0 drubbing in the Sydney International final last year. Cibulkova knows she doesnt have a great record against Radwanska, but she takes inspiration from Stanislas Wawrinkas upset of four-time mens champion Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals after 14 consecutive losses to the Serb. "You just want to prove it to yourself that you can do it, and thats what (Wawrinka) did," Cibulkova said. Li, a two-time finalist at the Australian Open, has the most experience of any of the semifinalists playing in the latter stages of slams, but shes also been susceptible to buckling under pressure. Li was up a set in the finals here against Kim Clijsters in 2011 and Azarenka in 2013, only to falter both times. She also nervously wasted four match points in a fourth-round loss to Clijsters in 2012, breaking down in tears afterward. The Chinese star was almost out of this years tournament, as well, saving a match point against Lucie Safarova in the third round. Since then, however, shes appeared more focused on court, dropping just six games in her last two matches. The wild card is Bouchard. Li, who will be 32 next month, is 12 years older than the Canadian and has won their only previous meeting, but Bouchard is a rising talent with nothing to lose. She likes her chances in a tournament as topsy-turvy as this one. "I think some players can still lose on any given day and it still makes it extremely interesting," she said. "Im feeling confident and just excited to play." Red Nike Air Max Womens . Watch the game on TSN at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt. Nick Foligno had three assists while Kevin Connauton, James Wisniewski and Mark Letestu all scored for the Blue Jackets, who have won four of five. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 24 shots in the win. Antoine Roussel and Ales Hemsky each scored a goal for the Stars, who have dropped their past two. Anders Lindback allowed four goals on 20 shots. Columbus struck 5:21 into the game as Wisniewski cranked a blast from the high slot that hit off a stick in front and got past Lindback for a 1-0 lead. Just over two minutes later, the Blue Jackets made it a 2-0 game on the power play thanks to Scott Hartnell blowing down the left wing to set up a 2-on-1 and passing it to the right where Johansen snapped it high for his 13th of the season. Columbus took a 3-0 lead 3:57 into thee second period on a one-timer from the high slot by Connauton, but the Stars were able to rally.dddddddddddd Hemsky got his team on the board at 5:28 of the second when his big blast from the right circle found the back of the net, and Roussels snapper from the slot beat Bobrovsky to make it a 3-2 game with 6:46 to play in the second. Dallas had a power play early in the third period but was unable to capitalize, and held off a Columbus man advantage a bit later to keep it a one-goal game. The Blue Jackets, though, put the game away on a 2-on-1 break that Letestu finished off on a redirect of a Alexander Wennberg pass with 2:58 showing on the clock. The deal, which still needs to be finalized and signed, could be worth more than $15 million over five years, Yahoo Sports reported on Monday. The report comes six weeks after Ollie led Connecticut to its fourth national title in 16 years and amid swirling rumors he could make the jump to fill one of several vacant NBA head coaching positions. The Huskies are 52-18 iin two seasons under Ollie, who took over in 2012 for Jim Calhoun after the Hall-of-Fame coach stepped aside because of health problems.dddddddddddd They were the first No. 7 seed to win the NCAA Tournament, beating Kentucky in the national final in April a year after being banned from the 2013 postseason over academics. Ollie, a former Huskies captain, signed an extension of his original one-year deal in December 2012 that was to run through the 2017-18 season. Yahoo Sports reported the new deal will more than double his previous salary. PARIS -- Paris Saint-Germain continued its relentless march toward a second straight French title after thrashing Nantes 5-0 with a superb display of attacking football on Sunday, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic once again in irrepressible form as he scored twice and turned provider for Edinson Cavani. Ibrahimovic drilled in a first-half penalty, then set up Cavani before grabbing his second of the night to take his league tally to 17 in 20 games season. PSG never let up and could even have added further goals against a dispirited Nantes side. They will meet again next month in the semifinals of the League Cup and Nantes will hardly be looking forward to that contest. Center half Thiago Silva and midfielder Thiago Motta got PSGs other goals. "The lads did a lot of good things and I think if we carry on like this we can win the Champions League as well," Silva said. "I feel really good here with everyone, the coach, the president and I think I will stay here until the end of my contract. Ibra is a great player with a big personality, and I think he will stay as well." Meanwhile, Monaco won 2-0 away to Toulouse and Lyon made it 10 games unbeaten in all competitions with a 2-0 win at Reims. But Monacos win did little to unsettle PSG as former French president Nicolas Sarkozy was among the appreciative fans at Parc des Princes. "I think the players enjoyed it more than anyone," PSG coach Laurent Blanc said. "We could have eased up at 3-0 but the players wanted to score more, and thats good." PSG took the lead from a corner in 10th minute when goalkeeper Remy Riou saved Cavanis header and the rebound fell perfectly for Silva, giving him an easy finish from close range. PSG doubled its lead in the 36th when Ibrahimovic sent Riou the wrong way from the spot after defender Issa Cissokho had tripped Marco Verratti just inside the penalty area. The Sweden forward has scored six penalties this season. Brazilian winger Lucas came on for Argentinas Ezequiel Lavezzi at the start of the second half and within minutes he was involved in PSGs third goal in the 51st. His deep, floating cross from the right was headed back by Blaise Matuidi and Motta reacted quickly to slide the ball in from close range. Ibrahimovic found himself in space on the right wing and curled in a perfect pass to give Cavani his 13th goal of the season in the 58th, and Ibrahimovic slammed the ball past Riou after Matuidi and substitute Javier Pastore combined to set him up in the 64th. "We didnt do anything out there -- in defence, midfield or up front. They just did what they wanted. We just sat back and waited," said Nantes winger Fabrice Pancrate, who used to play for PSG. "If you dont play properly against a team like this, you get a result like that. We seemed to be terrified. I didnt recognize my teammates out there." Cavani missed two chances to make it 6-0 when he swiped a shot wide and then hit his shot straight at Riou after going clean through in the 87th. Earlier, left back Layvin Kurzawa put Monaco ahead in the 36th with a low shot after being set up by midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia, sweeping the ball in after running onto Kondogbias cross from the left. Lucas Ocampos came off the bench to add a second with a spectacular bicycle kick in the 88th. The Argentine winger replaced Colombia forward Radamel Falcao, after he missed three chances. Falcao has only scored once in his past five games for Monaco and appears short of form. "Its an important three points for us and it helps us get back on track," Monaco coach Claudio Ranieri said. Lyons goals came from striker Alexandre Lacazette and midfielder Gueida Fofana, moving the seven-time French champion up to eighth place. Yeezy Boost 350 Pink For Sale . The NBA began to issue punishments last season for flopping, the art of exaggerating contact to deceive referees into calling a foul, but only retroactively. Betis hired Calderon on Monday, its third manager of the season, after Juan Carlos Garrido was fired. But the visitors continued to show the same holes in defence as Celta picked them apart following Ruben Castros opener for Betis in the 17th minute.FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- LeGarrette Blount made one last big splash into a soggy end zone. The powerful back finished his 35-yard touchdown run up the left sideline by flopping with outstretched arms and capping the New England Patriots 34-20 win over the Buffalo Bills in a steady downpour Sunday. The victory gave the Patriots a first-round bye and the Gillette Stadium field an extra week to dry out. "He carried the team on his back most of the day," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. The rain "got worse as the game went along. It was definitely a running game." Blount rushed for a career-high 189 yards, returned two kickoffs for 145 and set a club record with 334 all-purpose yards. The Patriots (12-4) obtained Blount in an off-season trade with Tampa Bay and he shared playing time with other backs since then. On Sunday, the 250-pounder led the charge. He also scored on a 36-yard run and set up a touchdown and field goal with kickoff returns of 83 and 62 yards. The extra point after his 35-yarder put the Patriots ahead 34-20 with 2:31 left. "Every time I play I try my best to come out with the mindset to make a contribution to any part of the game, whether its kick returns or running the ball or catching it," Blount said. After his second touchdown, he hugged Belichick, who had a towel draped over his shoulders. Tom Brady was content to hand the ball off rather than throw through rain drops against a team leading the NFL in sacks and second in interceptions. "The water on the field at the end, it was just puddles," he said. Stephen Gostkowski kicked four field goals as the Patriots earned their eighth bye in Belichicks 14 seasons. The Bills (6-10) missed the playoffs for the 14th straight year, the leagues longest current streak. They won their previous two games. "It would be much different if we were ending on a three-game winning streak," Bills coach Doug Marrone said. "To say that youre close or anything like that, until you win we dont have a leg to stand on." New England won its 13th straight home game against Buffalo, including 12-0 since Gillette opened in 2002. The Patriots have the second seed and play in two weeks at home, where theyre 8-0. Denver, which beat Oakland, has the top seed. New England began its game with a chance to finish in any of the AFCs top four playoff spots.dddddddddddd "We put together a great season, but it doesnt matter much now," Brady said. The Bills played without quarterback EJ Manuel, who has a small tear in a left knee ligament, and wide receiver Stevie Johnson, excused for the second straight game after his mothers death. Backup Thad Lewis threw a 12-yard scoring pass to T.J. Graham late in the third quarter and led an 80-yard drive capped by Fred Jacksons 5-yard run with 10:20 remaining. After each of those touchdowns Blount had his long kickoff returns. His 83-yarder set up Bradys 5-yard scoring pass to Shane Vereen, followed by a 2-point conversion pass that made it 24-10. The 62-yarder led to Gostkowskis fourth field goal, a 35-yarder that put the Patriots ahead 27-17. The Bills turned over the ball on downs on their next possession. "Of course the ball is wet," Buffalo wide receiver Robert Woods said, "but we still have to make plays and catch the ball." Before the Patriots ran the next play, "Singin in the Rain" blared over the public address system, and drenched fans sang along. Then Manny Lawson intercepted Bradys pass and the Bills capitalized with Dan Carpenters 37-yard field goal. Buffalo tried an onside kick, but Nate Ebner recovered for New England. Blount then ran 10 yards before scoring his second touchdown on the next play. The game even featured a punt by Brady on third-and-32 from his 46-yard line midway through the third quarter with the score 16-3. It travelled 32 yards, where Jim Leonhard made a fair catch. "It could have been a lot better," Brady said. Brady finished 14 of 24 for 122 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Lewis went 16 for 29 for 247 yards and a touchdown. C.J. Spiller led the Bills with 105 yards rushing. NOTES: Bills tackle Marcell Dareus was benched for the first half for violating a team rule. In Buffalos previous game he was benched for the first quarter, also for violating a team rule. ... The previous Patriots record for all-purpose yards was 273 by Larry Garron in 1962 at Buffalo. ... Carpenters 51-yard field goal that tied the game at 3 made him the first player in Bills history with four field goals of at least 50 yards or more in a season. MIAMI -- The NFLs report in the Miami Dolphins bullying case is expected to be released soon, shedding further light on the much-scrutinized, troubled relationship between offensive linemen Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito. The report likely will address whether the Dolphins organization was at fault for the locker-room culture that led Martin to leave the team last October. He later said he was harassed daily by teammates, including Incognito, and alleged their racial, aggressive and sexually charged comments played a role in his departure. Incognitos suspension by the team was lifted Tuesday. Dolphins officials say that was an administrative move agreed to by all parties last year, and had nothing to do with any new developments in the league investigation of the case. Last week, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said he has an idea of what will be in the leagues report, and indicated he doesnt expect any new revelations. He said hes proud of the way the people running the franchise responded to the scandal. Martin has said he tried to be friends with Incognito. The two players traded more a thousand text messages in a years span, and the teasing and vulgar banter went both ways, with references to sex, drugs, violence and bawdy behaviour, often in a jocular tone. The back-and-forth continued last week. In his first interview since the scandal broke, Martin told NBC persistent vulgar language around the team made him feel trapped. Incognitos attorney Mark Schamel responded with a statement saying Martin was "hiding behind false allegations" rather than dealing with "his poor on-field performance and myriad other issues." The NFL report will come from New York attorney Ted Wells three months after he was retained by the league to investigate the case, which inspired a national debate about hazing and workplace bullying. Wells will determine the role of coach Joe Philbin, his staff and Miami management in the case. One issue is whether anyone on the coaching staff ordered Incognito to toughen up Martin, who became a starter as a rookie in 2012 but played poorly at times. Martin has said people in the organization knew he was unhappy about comments teammates made to him, but he didnt talk to Philbin about it. The 6-foot-5, 312-pound Martin abruptly left the team Oct. 28. He was briefly hospitalized and then joined his family in California and underwent counselling for emotional issues. Incognito was suspended Nov. 3 and sat out the final eight games. Both players have said they want to play in 2014, but it likely wont be with the Dolphins. Incognito becomes a free agent next month and will probably sign with another team, and Dolphins are expected to trade or release Martin, who has two years remaining on his contract. In a tweet Tuesday, Incognito said he supported Martin "100 per cent in his return to football in 2014." Teammates said the two linemen seemed to be good friends, despite their contrasting backgrounds. Martin, 24, was a classics major at Stanford, while Incognito, 30, was kicked off his team at Nebraska and went on to develop a reputation as one of the NFLs dirtiest players known for out-of-bounds behaviour. Incognito has said he regrets racist and profane language he used with Martin, but said it stemmed from a culture of locker-room "brotherhood," not bullying. Incognito is white and Martin is black. Teammates both black and white have said Incognito is not a racist, and theyve been more supportive of the veteran guard than they have of Martin. In November there were reports that Ross might clean house after the season. But Philbin was retained to return for a third season in 2014, and most of his staff remains, including offensive line coach Jim Turner, who worked most closely with Incognito and Martin. "Jim Turner is an amazing coach and friend," Incognito tweeted Tuesday. General manager Jeff Ireland left the Dolphins in January after six seasons because of the teams mediocre results, and because he clashed with Philbin over personnel decisions. The fourth-seeded Chinese star beat Dominika Cibulkova 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 at Rod Laver Arena to capture her first Australian Open title on Saturday. Li played in her third final in four years at Melbourne Park. She lost to Kim Clijsters in 2011 and Victoria Azarenka last year before finally breaking through at the seasons first Grand Slam event against the 20th-seeded Cibulkova. "After I win the match, I really, really exciting," Li said. "I think I have drops still coming down, you know. I try to have hug with the team, but is too high. I cannot catch it (laughter)." Her win came at the end of a fortnight featuring an array of surprising results on the womens side. It was the first time since 1997 that none of the top three seeds made the semifinals. Li committed 25 of her 30 unforced errors in a competitive opening set before she unexpectedly breezed through the second. She had a 34-11 advantage in winners, many coming on her lethal backhand, and converted half of her 10 break-point chances. The second double fault by Cibulkova in the matchs opening game gave Li an early break. A double fault then hurt Li as Cibulkova gained a break to level the first set at 3-all. Li earned a break point with a strong backhand winner in the ninth game, but two of her forehands flew long and Cibulkova was able to hold for a 5-4 lead. After closing out a relative easy service game with an ace to extend the set, Li earned two break points when she followed up Cibulkovas sixth double fault with a blistering ccrosscourt backhand.dddddddddddd Cibulkova then netted a backhand to give Li a 6-5 lead before she broke back to force a tiebreak. Li raced out to a commanding 5-1 lead in the tiebreak and she later claimed the 70-minute first set when Cibulkova dumped a backhand into the net. The second set lasted only 27 minutes and ended with Cibulkova sending a ground stroke long. "You know, it was my first Grand Slam finals and Im just proud with the way I handle it," Cibulkova said. "You know, I just went on the court. I wanted to play my best tennis. It wasnt easy against her because she was playing extremely well. So Im quite happy." Li, who turns 32 next month, captured her second Grand Slam title, adding to her victory at the 2011 French Open, and improved to 9-11 in career finals. She also is just the fourth woman to win the Aussie Open crown after saving a match point. She fought off the match point in the third round against Lucie Safarova and joined Monica Seles (1991), Jennifer Capriati (2002) and Serena Williams (2003 and 2005) to accomplish the feat. "Yeah, start of tournament everybody talking about the age," Li said. "I would like to say age is nothing. Still can win the Grand Slam. So pretty happy about my age. I got more experience on the court." Cibulkova, who stands just 5-foot-3, knocked off No. 3 seed Maria Sharapova in the fourth round and No. 5 seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the semifinals to become Slovakias first Grand Slam finalist. The 24-year-old fell to 3-6 in her career title tilts and 0-5 against Li. Injured Toronto Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul skated for nearly 20 minutes in full equipment Saturday alongside strength and conditioning coach Anthony Belza. This was the first time the 31-year-old has been seen on the ice since he broke his right hand at practice on Oct. 30. Head coach Randy Carlyle previously said Lupul is expected to miss three weeks. Lupul, who has missed two games since the injury, was originally expected to wear a cast for a minimum of 10 days before being able to put a glove on. While he was able to sport the glove, the Alberta native did not shoot any pucks. Lupul has two goals and an assist with six penalty minutes in nine games this season. The Chicago Bears have signed former Hamilton Tiger-Cats receiver Chris Williams from the New Orleans Saints practice squad. Williams spent the past 12 weeks on the Saints practice squad, after he and the TiCats had settled their arbitration case in October. TSN Reporter Farhan Lalji confirms that Bears head coach Marc Trestman, who saw Williams exploits in the CFL first hand during his time as the head coach of the Montreal Alouettes, was instrumental in Williams signing with Chicago. Williams will be on the Bears 53 man roster this week. According to Lalji, Williams was given a $100,000 signing bonus from the Bears. He also earned the NFL minimum salary while with the Saints, despite only being on the practice roster, so his total compensation for 2013 will be $300,000. Nike Blazer Basse Verdi . PHOENIX -- Finally, the Arizona Diamondbacks won a series at home. Cody Ross hit his first home run of the year, Eric Chavez went deep for the second consecutive day and the Diamondbacks beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3 on Sunday for their first series win at Chase Field all season. After setting a team record for runs Saturday night in an 18-5 rout, the Diamondbacks broke a 3-all tie with Chavezs two-run shot off Dan Haren (5-2) in the fifth inning. "We kind of went in there with a little momentum," manager Kirk Gibson said. "Last nights game was good for us. The thing about last nights game is, unless you play good (today), it doesnt really mean anything." Ross, batting .163 entering the game after coming back from major hip surgery, also doubled for Arizona, which has won two straight over the Dodgers after losing eight of the first nine meetings this season. "I felt something in BP the other day where I was, All right, I can start driving the ball," Ross said. Chris Owings singled three times and stole two bases for the Diamondbacks. The rookie is 9 for 11 against Haren. Hanley Ramirez and Adrian Gonzalez homered for the Dodgers, who have lost three of four. "Obviously, you dont want to keep losing series. If you lose series you are not going to go anywhere," Los Angeles manager Don Mattingly said. "I am really worried about day to day. Till we can grind out wins, we are in trouble." Josh Collmenter (2-2) went 5 1-3 innings to get the win. Addison Reed threw a scoreless ninth for his 12th save. Collmenter was lifted after 84 pitches, allowing two runs and four hits. "If you can beat division rivals at home, thats big," Collmenter said. "Especially the way weve been able to play halfway decent on the road, if we can match that at home I think we can get our record where we want it to be." Haren gave up five runs, a season-high four earned, and 10 hits in six innings. "The last three games have been a struggle for me," he said. "Prior to that I was fine. I have to look and see what I was doing earlier in the year." Owings led off the fifth with a single. With two outs and a 3-2 count, Chavez -- who entered in the fourth after Martin Prado left with blurred vision in his left eye -- hit an opposite-field homer to left. That gave Chavez home runs in consecutive at-bats. He also had a pinch-hit shot Saturday. After first baseman Paul Goldschmidt dropped a relay throw for what would have been an inning-ending double play, the Dodgers loaded the bases with two outs against Brad Ziegler in the eighth. But second baseman Cliff Pennington caught Matt Kemps liner to end the inning. Ramirezs two-out homer in the first gave the Dodgers a 1-0 lead. Arizona tied it with an unearned run in the second. Ross doubled and scored when Ramirez threw wildly to first while trying to turn what would have been an inning-ending double play. In the third, Ramirez walked and Gonzalez homered to give the Dodgers a 3-1 lead. The Diamondbacks cut it to 3-2 when Gerardo Parra led off the bottom half with a single, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Owings single. Ross first home run of the season tied it at 3 in the fourth. Even with the victory, the Diamondbacks are 6-16 at Chase Field this season. NOTES: Randy Johnson threw out the ceremonial first pitch to commemorate his perfect game 10 years ago. ... Dodgers OF Yasiel Puig went 0 for 3 and was hit by a pitch, ending his 16-game hitting streak. ... Diamondbacks 2B Aaron Hill sat out his second straight game with a sore right shoulder. ... Jacksonville, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Josh Scobee kicked a 43-yard field goal with 28 seconds remaining to give the Jacksonville Jaguars a stunning 25-24 come-from-behind victory over the reeling New York Giants on Sunday at EverBank Field. The Jaguars (2-10) scored a pair of defensive touchdowns in the second half to rally from a 21-0 deficit, ending a four-game slide while sending the Giants (3-9) to their seventh straight loss. Blake Bortles helped the comeback, throwing for 194 yards with a touchdown. He also rushed for a team-high 68 yards on five carries, including a 20-yard run that set up Scobees go-ahead kick. Josh Brown kicked a 33-yard field goal to give the Giants a 24-22 lead with 3:26 remaining, ending a string of 22 straight Jacksonville points, but the Jaguars would not be denied. Jacksonville overcame a pair of penalties and marched 55 yards to reach field goal range for Scobee, who easily split the uprights to put the Jaguars back on top. Bortles keyed the drive with a pair of big plays. He followed a false start penalty with a 22-yard pass to Marqise Lee and later followed a holding call with his 20-yard run to the New York 20-yard line. The Jaguars defense then sealed it on the first play after the kickoff when Eli Manning fumbled while being sacked and Chris Clemons recovered. Manning threw for 247 yards with a touchdown and Rashad Jennings ran for 91 yards with a pair of scores for New York, which hasnt won since a 30-20 triumph against Atlanta on Oct. 5. The Giants seven-game skid is their longest since an eight-game slide in 2004, Tom Coughlins first season as head coach. Coughlins job security has been a question during the teams struggles this year. It was anything but a struggle early for the Giants, who scored on three straight possessions while the Jaguars failed to produce anything offensively. New York opened the scoring on its second series, marching 91 yards on 19 plays in just under 10 minutes. Jennings carried the ball 12 times for 48 yards during the trek, finishing it with a 2-yard run on the first play of the second quarter. After Jacksonville went three-and-out for the second time, the Giants took over at their own 46 and needed six plays to again find the end zone. Manning keyed the set with a 32-yard pass to tight end Larry Donnell and finished it with a 3-yard strike to Preston Parker. The Jaguars again failed to pick up a first down and the Giants drove 63 yards for another touchdown. A 29-yard pass from Manning to Odell Beckham Jr. ignited the series and Jennings capped it with a 17-yard touchdown run for a seemingly comfortable 21-0 advantage. Jacksonville finally mounted a threat after picking up its initial first down with less than six minutes remaining in the first half. The Jaguars drove to the New York 5-yard line and had a Bortles touchdown pass negated by a holding penalty before settling for a 28-yard Scobee field goal. A Jaguars punt pinned the Giants inside their own 5-yard line early in the third quarter and the Jacksonville defense picked up its first score of the day just two plays later when Manning was sacked and fumbled. J.T. Thomas recovered in the end zone to make it a 21-10 game. After a trade of punts, Brown missed a 43-yard field goal try for the Giants and the Jaguars answered with a 67-yard drive that Bortles finished with a 30- yard TD pass to Lee. The two-point try failed, leaving the Jaguars down 21-16 with 1:55 left in the third quarter. The Giants then gave the Jaguars the lead just over two minutes into the fourth. Donnell fumbled after a reception and Aaron Colvin raced 41 yards the other way for the score. Again, the two-point try failed and Jacksonvilles edge was just 22-21. Game Notes The Jaguars scored a pair of defensive touchdowns in a game for the first time in franchise history ... Bortles was sacked seven times ... Lee finished with six catches for 75 yards ... Beckham had seven receptions for 90 yards ... The Giants converted 7-of-15 third downs and outgained the Jags 329-258 ... Brown had been perfect on each of his first 10 field goal tries before the miss in the third quarter ... Jennings exited the contest with an ankle injury ... New York offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz was carted off the field in the first quarter ... The Giants visit Tennessee next Sunday ... Jacksonville hosts Houston next Sunday. Nike Flyknit Chukka Saldi .com) - In a game between teams at the bottom of their respective conferences that could be key determining draft lottery odds, the Edmonton Oilers prevailed over the Buffalo Sabres, 3-2, on Thursday. Nike Air Huarache Nere . -- Chris Bosh made his case: He wanted to go for the win.ORLANDO, Fla. -- Cleveland coach Mike Brown has been saying for games theres no magical way to make his team play better on the road. A big scoring night by Kyrie Irving is one way to end the woes. Irving scored 31 points, Dion Waiters added 21, and the Cavaliers used a big second half to earn just their second road victory of the season, 109-100 over the Orlando Magic on Friday night. Waiters had 20 points in the second half and scored 16 straight at one point as Cleveland outmuscled the Magic 36-30 in the paint. For Irving, it was his second straight 30-point game, following up a 37-point effort on Tuesday against New York. "Were starting to develop our identity as a great team, especially when things arent going our way offensively," Irving said. "Were not doing as well as we want on the road, but were taking steps in the right direction." Cleveland has won three straight and five out of six. It was its first road win since Nov. 16 and what the Cavs hope can help them start to turn around what had been a NBA-worst 1-10 road record. The Cavaliers came into the game allowing opponents to shoot 47.2 per cent against them away from home. The Magic started the night hot, but cooled to 43 per cent for the night. Brown said he particularly liked how his team took care of the ball with only two second-half turnovers. "At the end of the first quarter we got careless and started turning the ball over and that hurt us," he said. "But to have two turnovers in the second half was huge." Victor Oladipo tied a career high with 26 points. Arron Afflalo and Jameer Nelson each added 17. Orlando tried different combinations on Irving, but nothing worked as it blew a 14-point, first-half lead. That happened despite the Magic scoring 25 fast-break points. After the hot start, Orlando finished the first half just 9 of 29 from field. Meanwhile, Irving carried Clevelands offensive load with 16 first-half points as it recovered from a 9-for-24 shooting effort in first quarter to go 12 for 19 in the second. "Only one person had the ball in his hands and that one person was shooting," Magic coach Jacque Vaughn said. "So whether it was Kyriee shooting or Dion Waiters shooting, I think that limited their risk of turning the basketball over.dddddddddddd" The Magic have lost seven of their last eight and clearly have a lot to figure out as they head back on the road next week for back-to-back games against Oklahoma City and Chicago. Orlandos recent frustrations seemed to bubble up in the final seconds, when forward Andrew Nicholson shoved Cavaliers big man Anderson Varejao in the back after he made an easy layup. With Varejao -- who had gone to the bench in the first half after banging his knee -- still on the floor, Waiters briefly confronted Nicholson as referees stepped in. Following a huddle by officials, Nicholson was given a Flagrant 2 foul and ejected. "I didnt try to hurt him," Nicholson said. "I didnt think I pushed him that hard, but its part of the game." The Magic seemed to be on their way to victory in the first half. After being stricken by a spate of injuries early in the season, they had forward Tobias Harris on the floor for just the second time this season. Harris, who has been hampered by a sprained left ankle, didnt start and played sparingly, logging just 15 minutes. Harris 3-pointer gave the Magic a five-point lead early in the fourth quarter before Waiters ignited a 14-0 run that put Cleveland up 95-85 with less than six minutes to play. The Cavaliers pushed their lead to 101-90 with 2:29 to play. The Magic had one more run in them and got within 101-96 on a pair of free throws by Afflalo, but they got no closer. "I had to turn it up. I had to be aggressive," Waiters said. "I was frustrated in the first half. I let every little thing get the best of me, and I just told myself to come out in the second half and be aggressive. Shots were going in and out on me and it was frustrating. I just had to gather myself and get my thoughts together." Notes: As part of the teams yearlong 25th anniversary celebration, the Magic honoured former guard Dennis Scott on Friday night. Orlandos fourth pick in the 1990 NBA draft, Scott played seven seasons for the Magic from 1990 to 1997 and is the franchises career leader in 3-point field goals made (981). Each week, The Reporters put their thumbs out to the good and the bad in the world of sports. This week, they discuss Richard Sherman, Kevin Durant, the NFL Draft and the MLBs review system. Dave Naylor, TSN 1050 My thumb is down to Seattle Seahawk Richard Sherman for his view that the NFL would not have banned LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life because the NFL is "more of a bottom line league." Richard, youre known as a smart guy, so surely you can understand that the NBAs decision to ban Sterling was as driven by its bottom line as it was by its moral convictions. Yes, Adam Silver did the right thing, but the NBA commissioner was also doing the one and only thing that would ensure Sterlings racist words wouldnt carve into the NBAs annual $5 billion revenue pie. Youre right about the NFL being a bottom-line league. But thats precisely the reason Roger Goodell would have done the exact same thing that Adam Silver did. Steve Simmons, Sun Media My thumb is up to Kevin Durant, here on Mothers Day, for making the greatest MVP speech maybe any athlete has ever made. In winning the MVP of the National Basketball Association, Durant made a modest, heartwarming, thoughtful, emotional speech, thanking his mom, bringing tears to his eyes - and with that to the eyes of many, including his mother. Durant thanked every teammate individually, saying something special and personal about each, along with mentioning his coach and his general manager and the support staff of the Oklahoma City Thunder. If you didnt like Durant before, you do now. If you havent heard this - and the way the NBA presents awards between playoff games you might have missed it - please go to your computer, take the time, go to Youtube and find it online. Make that your gift to yourself today. Michael Farber, Sports Illustrated My thumb is down to the NFL Draft, not because, like all drafts, it mocks free-market principles, but because it is so staggeringly long. Three days of non-stop, non-action - men in suits calling the names of younger men in more stylish suits. Instead of gazing at Mel Kiper Jrs remarkable hair, you could have driven from Halifax to Vancouver and back to Calgary, enjoying this land and making several doughnut stops. You could have been reading Catch 22 instead of been obsessing over who went 22. Yeah, I get it. The NFL rules the world. But its draft needs an editor worse than the Browns need a quarterback. Dave Hodge, TSN My thumb is down to one part of baseballs video review system, and one part only - like the NFL Draft - it takes too long. Otherwise, its fine, bad calls by umpires that would otherwise stand are corrected. The absence of childish rants by managers enhances the game. The opportunity for fans in the stands to study the play in question is a real breakthrough, but the length of time it takes for umpires and the MLB war room to make their decisions is a problem - one that is easily fixed, mind you. If theres not enough evidence to overturn a call in a strictly-enforced time limit, then the original call prevails. And thats the way its supposed to work, so replay doesnt take too long. Owings Mills, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Gary Kubiak made it known he will not take one of the NFLs vacant head coaching positions, saying Sunday he will remain the offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. Kubiak said it was flattering and humbling to be invited to interview for the open spots but opted to stay with the Ravens, who hired him last January after he was fired as the head coach of Texans. This is a special organization and we, like [head] coach [John] Harbaugh says, are building something great. I want to be a part of that and contribute in whatever ways I can, Kubiak said on the teams website. Baltimore posted a franchise record 364.9 yards per game and its offense finished 12th in the league under Kubiak this season, which ended Saturday in a divisional round loss to the Patriots. Kubiak was hired as the Texans head coach in 2006 and compiled a 61-64 record. He led Houston to the playoffs twice. Prior to joining the Texans, Kubiak was the Denver Broncos offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 1995-2005. In Winnipeg, the Jets kick off their exhibition schedule when they host the Minnesota Wild at MTS Centre.Leading up to SportsCentres Year In Review on Christmas Eve, TSN and TSN.ca look back at each of the Top 10 stories of 2013. Today, we look back at one of the most shocking sports stories in recent years - Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorious being charged with murder. Oscar Pistorius was one of the feel-good figures of 2012. The Blade Runner became the first amputee runner to compete at an Olympic Games and carried the South African flag at the closing ceremony in London. His competitors sought his bib after they finished racing him and Pistorius embodied the type of anythings possible spirit that the Olympics cling to as a good will event. That all changed on Valentines Day of 2013, when word came out of South Africa that Pistorius had been charged with the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. The shocking details of the incident would come to light in early reports as well as a bail hearing that started five days later. Pistoriuss defence argued that the then-26-year-old got up in the middle of the niight to confront what he believed to be an intruder in his Pretoria home.dddddddddddd The sprinter got up and fired four shots through his locked bathroom door, hitting Steenkamp three times and killing her. After a change in investigators (due to pending attempted murder charges against officer Hilton Botha himself), the prosecution appealed for bail, painting Pistorius as a man of means who could flee South Africa. The verdict came down on February 22: Pistorius was granted bail with Magistrate Desmond Nair stating, "The issue before me is whether this accused, being who is and the assets he has (here), would seek to duck and dive all over the world." "I cannot find that he is a flight risk," he would conclude, leaving Pistorius free from jail time in the months leading up to his March 2014 trial. Pistorius would return to the track in June, resuming training in what his agent Peet van Zyl described as a "very emotional" and "bittersweet" experience. MINNEAPOLIS -- The banged-up Minnesota Timberwolves were just what the Portland Trail Blazers needed. Having lost six of their previous 10 games, and with a date against first-place Oklahoma City looming on Tuesday, the Blazers took advantage of a Timberwolves team missing three of its best players. "We felt that way even if they had all their guys," LaMarcus Aldridge said after scoring 26 points to lead Portland past Minnesota 117-110 Saturday night. "If they had those guys, it definitely wouldve been different, but this was a must-win game either way." Aldridge scored 16 of his points in the second half and Wesley Matthews added 21 as the Blazers held off a tougher-than-expected Wolves team missing starters Kevin Love, Nikola Pekovic and Kevin Martin. Just minutes before tipoff, the Wolves announced Love -- their All-Star power forward -- would miss the game with a bruised left quadriceps sustained in Friday nights loss in New Orleans. Shortly before that, Martin was ruled out indefinitely with a broken left thumb, also suffered against the Pelicans. Combined with Pekovic, the trio accounts for an average of 60 points and 25 rebounds per game. "It takes a little edge off the game," Blazers coach Terry Stotts said. "We found out Kevin Martin wasnt going to play early and then Love wasnt going to play. I think that deflates the balloon a little bit, you kind of get yourself up for guys like that." But the Blazers knew they couldnt afford to let up against the scrappy Wolves, who trailed for most of the first half but led 82-75 with 1:50 to play in the third quarter. Corey Brewer led Minnesota with 26 points and Ricky Rubio scored a career-high 25. Minnesota led 87-85 with 9:48 to play in the game before Portland went on a 13-1 run to put the game away. Minnesota pulled within 101-96 with 3:29 to play before Matthews scored five straight and Robin Lopez hit a layup to put the game out of reach. The Wolves got 19 points from Chase Budinger, 14 from Dante Cunningham and a season-high 12 from rookie Shabazz Muhammad. "It doesnt matter whos out," coach Rick Adelman said. "The next guy steps up, thats how you have to approach it. You cant worry about whos not playing, worry about who is playing, and make the best out of the situation. I thought we played well tonight." Aldridge had six points during Portlands game-deciding 13-1 run in the fourth quarter. That run came with Rubio on the bench. Rookie C.J. McCollum had a season-high 19 points and Nicolas Batum added 15 for the Blazers, who finished their four-game road trip 2-2. "We were really counting on our bench tonight because I really wanted to rest the starters," Stotts said. "They all played a lot of minutes last night and the first half the bench really gave us a boost. We were able to make a little ground with them in the game." Minnesotas key starters also got a rest -- in their street clothes. "Its tough having all of those guys out," Budinger said. "Those are huge impact guys for us and were hoping Kevin was able to go but he was really struggling and hurting. He tried to get himself going but just couldnt do it." NOTES: During halftime, Love told The AP he hopes to play on Monday night against Houston. ... The Blazers played a second-straight game without backup point guard Mo Williams, who left the team Friday for family reasons. Stotts did not have an update on when Williams might return. ... Adelman is assuming Pekovic will not return until after the All-Star break. ... Love bought a full-page advertisement in Sundays Minneapolis Star Tribune thanking fans for voting him an All-Star starter. "Just my way of paying tribute to the fans," he said at halftime. CALGARY -- John Kuceras career was shorter than he wanted but he leaves alpine ski racing knowing he achieved two firsts for Canada. The first Canadian man to win a world downhill championship and the Canadian skier to stand atop the World Cup podium in Lake Louise, Alta., announced his retirement from ski racing Thursday. Kucera won the mens downhill title in Val-dIsere, France, in 2009. He earned three career World Cup medals in super-G, including gold in Lake Louise in 2006. "Im just really proud I managed to take a very short career and do big things with it," the 29-year-old Calgarian said at Alpine Canadas headquarters in his hometown. "It was a great ride. It really was. "I did some things in this country that I was the first to do and Im really proud of that." Kuceras first four years on the national team were successful and promising. But a broken leg followed by a frustrating inner ear condition sidelined him for four of the last five seasons and also kept him from competing in two Winter Olympics. Vestibular neuritis -- an inner ear condition causing dizziness and nausea -- struck during a training camp in Chile last September and made it impossible to race through gates at 130 kilometres per hour. Kucera wasnt able to get back on skis to race at the Winter Games in Sochi in February. The symptoms still linger and the uncertainty over how long theyll remain, combined with an opportunity to join the coaching staff of the national development team, steered Kucera towards retirement. "Truth be told, Im not 100 per cent yet," he said. "I think my body just told me it was time to start doing something else. "This vestibular neuritis is tough because there is no time line. I could be good by July, but I could be good by next July and really, nobody can give me that answer. Who wouldve thought the thing that would have finally took me out was waking up dizzy one morning?" Super giant slalom, or super-G, is shorter than downhill but there are more gates on the course. The discipline requires a combination of speed and technical ability. At five foot nine and 185 pounds, Kucera wasnt as beefy as the top downhill racers early in his career, so he excelled in super-G. But on Feb. 7, 2009, he bested such heavyweights as Hermann Maier of Austria, Didier Cuche of Switzerland, Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway and American Bode Miller to win on Val-dIseres difficult slope. "Val-dIsere was a course that obviously played into a lot of my strengths, very technical, very steep," Kucera recalled. "That being said, I felt like every year I was becoming a better and better downhiller. "I just hit the right track, the right conditions and the right time of my career to become a champion there." Kucera was the first Canadian to win in 26 years of World Cup racing at Lake Louise when he captured super-G gold in 2006. He drew the No. 1 start bib, so after crossing the finish line, the 22-year-old stood nervously in front of television cameras watching as skier after skier came down the mountain. "I remember being really cold. I think it was -35 C that day," Kucera said. "Coming down, having that great run, freezing, watching a lot of the people I looked up to growing up and me beating them, it was pretty exciting." Kucera dedicated that victory to his former coach and friend, Jason Lapierre, who was hit by a car while biking and died earlier that year. Kuceras successes coincided with those of teammates Erik Guay, Manny Osborne-Paradis and Jan Hudec. The "Canadian Cowboys" have given the national mens downhill team depth it hasnt had since Steve Podborski and Ken Read headlined the "Crazy Canucks" of the 1980s. Guay won the mens downhill title again for Canada in 2011, while Hudec took silver in 2007. Guay passed Podborski as Canadas most decorated World Cup racer with 22 career medals. Guay also won the overall super-G title in 2010. Osborne-Paradis collected nine World Cup medals, including three gold, between 2006 and 2010. Hudec tied for third and won Olympic bronze in super-G in Sochi. "As a group, now with Jans medal at the Olympics, weve really done it all," Kucera said. "The only thing I guess you could say we havent done is we dont have an Olympic champion yet. "As a group, we pulled off some special things. Weve kind of superceded the Crazy Canuck era and did something great. Weve set the bar pretty high for the next group coming up, but I think thats where it needs to be." Kucera won two World Cup medals at Lake Louise -- he took silver there in 2008 -- but the mountain was disastrous for him in the first race of 2009-10. He badly broke his left leg in the super-G and erased his chance to race in Whistler, B.C., at the 2010 Winter Games. Rehabilitation and subsequent setbacks kept him off his race skis for the next three seasons. "Obviously the last four years hadnt gone exactly gone the way I would have liked them to, but that being said, I felt the time was right to step away now," Kucera said. "Ive had a good run as an athlete. "Im walking away relatively healthy. Thats a good thing. Im excited and passionate about the next group, the guys Im going to be working with because Im going to be working with a pretty exciting group of 17- to 19-year-olds." Kuceras parents, Jan and Zdena, emigrated to Canada from the former Czechoslovakia in the early 1980s before John was born. Jan worked with the ski patrol at nearby Nakiska. Meanwhile, the current champions were sunning themselves by the pool in Dubai. Not sure that was in the global expansion blueprint drawn up by the Glazer family. Nor, as their annus horribilis of a season wore on, would changing course and sitting down with Sir Alex Fergusons least popular person in football. Paul Stretford, Wayne Rooneys agent. Late last summer CEO Ed Woodward, without naming any player in particular, specified a willingness from the club to run player contracts through its term. These comments occurring as Chelsea were readying a second bid to sign Rooney who was going into the penultimate season of his current contract. Earlier Friday afternoon, and not long after a victorious Canadian mens team left the Sochi ice, Manchester United announced Rooney has committed himself to the cause through 2019. Stretford has played another blinder. It was only three years ago Rooney threatened to walk out of a club he saw did not meet his own ambitions. A few tears shed by Fergie in a pre-match conference and before you knew it, a brand new extended contract for Rooney making him the highest paid player in the globes most popular league. This latest deal is reported to be paying Rooney £300,000 ($525,000) a week, every week through June 2019. Factor in the image rights, something in the region of $150 million in total has been invested in the 27-year old. Its hard to tell though if this is a statement of intention or an insurance policy to ensure they convince some of the worlds very best that this season at Old Trafford is merely an aberration. This for a club thats currently battling it out with the likes of Newcastle and Everton for the BPLs sole spot in next seasons Europa League. Whilst the season on the pitch has lurched from one inept performance to the next embarrassing home defeat, the business of Manchester United Football Club has thrown up mixed blessings. Just last week the club released its latest financial report. As much as worldwide revenue continues to grow this has to be offset with the fact Bayern Munich recently replaced Manchester United from a podium spot on the annual Deloitte Football Rich List. Additionally, it is no coincidence that as the season has worn on, the price of the clubs shares on the New York Stock Exchange has reflected the dramatic fall of where Manchester United currently sit in the table. On the eve of the champions opening up their campaign August 17 (where they spanked Swansea 4-1) the share price stood at $17.41. Earlier today, the price was trading as low as $14.32. Over the course of the season this represents a fall in price closing in on 20 percent. One London-based bookmaker is currently offering odds of 12-1 the price will dip below $10 before seasons end. With that outlook, even the most ardent Manchester United supporters in the country wont be asking their financial advisor to include ticket symbol MANU in their portfolio this RRSP season. Not all of Manchester Uniteds misfortune can be laid squarely at the door marked manager. The failure of the club to reinvest their record breaking revenues in an aging squad has come to fruition this season. Manchester United has fallen way short in the transfer market throughoutt the Glazer tenure, which dates back to spring 2005.dddddddddddd Added to this, and much more of a key indicator when it comes to where clubs finish in the BPL standings, is an unwillingness to match the player salary marks of a Manchester City or Chelsea. Over the House of Glazer era, well in excess of a $1 billion has leaked out of the club in the form of interest payments and debt repayments. Yet only $500 million has been invested in the playing squad. Buying a Juan Mata per season does not cut it. Even in this UEFA Financial Fair Play era. Then factor in the 45 million mistakes that are Marouane Fellaini. The re-signing of Rooney will provide the same psychological boost as if the club has captured a world class signing. Like overpaying for Mata, it heralds just the start of addressing Glazers under-investment. Manchester Uniteds next big signing may well come off the pitch in the form of the clubs apparel supplier. If we are to believe recent reports, this could net the club $1 billion over a 10-year term. Only last month, Arsenal announced a massive deal with PUMA. Although no official figures were made available, one UK newspaper tagged it the biggest deal in PUMA and Arsenals history. Bayern Munichs latest victim receives close to $50 million a season from Emirates. It is well regarded Manchester United will not, like last summer, be chasing shadows in the transfer market come seasons end. They will though have to pay over the market odds for players. The international market for the very best is not a place for the faint of heart or light of wallet. At the table this summer will be a very forceful Sheik Mansour and Roman Abramovich and then throw in PSG owners the Qatari Investment Fund. And we havent mentioned Mr. Gallactico himself, Florentino Pérez. Just to make matters even more interesting for the Glazers bankers, history tells us a World Cup cycle is merely code word for luxury tax. What was $50 million in 2013 will be $60 million in 2014. The Pini Zahavis of the world rejoice even more every four years. With only 12 matches remaining in the season, Manchester United would have to go almost picture perfect the rest of the way to stand chance of clawing back the 11 points and a vastly inferior goal difference to Liverpools fourth place perch. Participation in Julys Europa League qualifiers is more probable. Going into Saturdays match away to a Tony Pullis rejuvenated Crystal Palace, the club sit seventh place in the table. If they remain in that spot come season end, to participate on the European stage next season Manchester Uniteds 650 million worldwide followers will have to cheer on Manchester City and Arsenal to domestic cup glory. Oh my how the very mighty will have fallen. In his last home match before hanging up the hair dryer, Ferguson addressed the 75,000 strong Old Trafford congregation post match and asked them to show patience for the new manager. Come May 3 - when United play their final home match of the season - lets hope for David Moyes sake he doesnt have to stand up at the final whistle and ask for their forgiveness. Melbourne, Australia (SportsNetwork.com) - Maria Sharapova reached her 10th career grand slam final after beating Ekaterina Makarova in straight sets at the Australian Open on Thursday. The 2008 Australian Open champion double-faulted seven times but fired 23 winners and three aces in the win. She has won 22 of her last 23 matches against fellow Russians and improved to 6-0 lifetime against Makarova, including 3-0 at the Australian Open following quarterfinals wins in 2012 and 2013. Chasing her sixth grand slam title and 35th career win, the 27-year-old Sharapova moved on to face the winner of Thursdays all-American semifinal between Williams and Madison Keyes. Sharapova is 5-4 in grand slam finals, including 1-1 at the Australian Open. Makarova, 26, made her second consecutive grand slam semifinal. She lost to Williams at last years U.S. Open. PAUL, Minn. -- Matching the Chicago Blackhawks is a tough task, and the Minnesota Wild werent going to catch up without more presence and production from their top forwards. After a couple of quiet games and two sluggish periods, Mikael Granlund, Zach Parise and the rest of the Wilds skill-position players came to life. Granlund scored twice, Parise had a goal and an assist, and Erik Haula jump-started the Wild by scoring early in the third period in a 4-0 victory over the Blackhawks on Tuesday in Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinal series. "The big guys definitely came through tonight," Wild coach Mike Yeo said. Ilya Bryzgalov made 19 saves for his first shutout in the playoffs in eight years, and the Blackhawks had their lead whittled to 2-1 with their first loss in 2 1/2 weeks. "Today is a tremendous team effort," Bryzgalov said. "We play very, very, very nice hockey." Game 4 is Friday in Minnesota. The announced attendance of 19,416 was the most in franchise history, but the atmosphere didnt match that until shortly after the second intermission. Pucks were whizzing way wide of the net, and clogged shooting lanes led to plenty of thwarted opportunities for both sides. "Theyre probably as tight a team as were going to play all year," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. Haula finally brought the fans to their feet. The rookie centre from Finland, once a standout for the University of Minnesota, started the play from the neutral zone and finished in front of the rush for a tap-in of Justin Fontaines slick pass through the defence. Then less than 3 minutes later, Granlund took a pass from Jason Pominville and went to his backhand to slip a high shot past Corey Crawfords glove for the 2-0 lead. The crowd began to taunt the goalie with a "Craw-ford! Craw-ford!" chant, and Parise put the exclamation point on the night with a power-play goal, the first in 25 chances for the Wild over their last two playoff series against the Blackhawks. Then Granlund tacked on an empty-netter with 1:17 left. "We know when we play like we can, we can beat any team in this league, especially here at home," Granlund said. Crawfordd stopped only 14 shots for the Blackhawks, who dropped their first two games to St.dddddddddddd Louis in the last round before winning four in a row. Since losing to the Blues on April 19, they took the lead in all six games and outscored their opponents 23-9. Despite outscoring the Wild 9-3 in the first two games of this series, the Blackhawks have not been able to test Bryzgalov much. "We cant let it frustrate us. We just have to do something about it," captain Jonathan Toews said, adding: "Theyre a smart defensive team. Give them credit. But its more about what were not doing." The blue liners were in full force early for Blackhawks, who blocked a whopping 25 shots in Game 2, six more than the Wild even sent at the net. Niklas Hjalmarsson bravely took one on the neck Sunday, and while the seventh-year veteran was cleared to play, the Swede wasnt even allowed to talk. Quenneville said before the game he wasnt worried about any communication problems between Hjalmarsson and his teammates. Had he been able to yell, Hjalmarsson wouldve been easy to hear for most of the night. For all the noise this crowd made in the last round, the synergy between vocal fan support and a relentless attack by the Wild was largely missing during the first 40 minutes. Yeo said this was the tightest-checking game hed ever been a part of. The offence came, eventually. Pominville has only one goal in nine playoff games, but he had two assists in this one. Mikko Koivu didnt make the scoring summary, but Yeo said his captain played a critical part in helping stifle the Blackhawks and their top lines. None of the Wilds top six forwards scored in the first two games, with Parise and Pominville managing the only assists. The Wild faced yet another desperate situation after trailing 2-0 in the last round against the Colorado Avalanche. "It was pretty familiar territory for us. We knew we had to win the game," Parise said. NOTES: The Blackhawks scratched defenceman Nick Leddy, his first absence since his rookie season of 2010-11. Quenneville said he wanted Sheldon Brookbank in the lineup for a physical presence. ... Bryzgalov had three shutouts in the 2006 playoffs for Anaheim.
